Hi! First post here. My husband was diagnosed just over twelve months ago. Symptoms have worsened and he has been told that he now needs to decide on action. This week, we've been to look at radiotherapy/ hormone therapy and on Friday we have an appointment regarding surgery. It's all really scary and struggling to see how we are all (husband and two older teens) going to cope with not only the physical but emotional impact on us all. Getting lots of advice on physical treatment but not on the mental/ emotional stuff. Sorry it's a long one but it's all very raw at the moment.
Hi Millyfoo , sorry you have joined our club, but you are most welcome. So looks like your husband has been on Active Surveillance and now it’s time for action. From your message it looks curable, so think of it as a bit of an inconvenience but focus on a cure. Try and avoid Dr Google as you will only worry yourself unnecessarily. The more positive you are the more it seems to help get through treatment and being fit at the start is another real advantage.
I have been over 9 years with a PCa diagnosis and there are times when it’s not great, but even with no cure available life can be good. Please ask anything and someone will be along to help.
Best wishes, David
Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.
Hello Millyfoo
A warm welcome to the group, although I am so sorry to find you joining us.
A note of your husbands diagnosis - PSA - Gleason and TNM Score would help us to help you.
The choice in treatments is a very personal choice and will affect you as a couple. I can only advise you to research the two treatments offered and list the possible side effects of each as to how they would affect you both. Use trusted sources for your research, Prostate Cancer UK, Cancer Research UK and Macmillan (not Dr Google).
There is another treatment - Brachytherapy - which may be suitable, but not offered as it's not given in your NHS Trust BUT it's also worth looking at. I will start you off with a few links:
Hormone / Radiotherapy Prostate Cancer
Brachytherapy - Prostate Cancer.
Once you have your list of pros and cons for each treatment - ask any questions on here, we have Community members who have been through each treatment and can answer your questions. Some of us have recorded our personal journey and you can read this by clicking on our names or avatars.
As to the emotional impact - we are all different, and a positive mental attitude does help.
Feel free to ask anything, nothing is too trivial.
Best wishes - Brian.
