Hi Pompey blue and welcome.

It may not be as bad as you think but what was the PSA result because that can give a clue as to what's going on and then MRI scan obviously can further the info.

One  always hopes for low stats because then it makes treatment so much easier.

I was diagnosed in 2013 and had treatment in 2017, stats were low so that obviously Def helped.

When U have MRI results and biopsy then hopefully it will be easier for you.

Another welcome to the Community from me - you are now among an amazing band of brothers and sisters who will support you on this journey you didn't want to go on.

Once you have had the biopsy (and possibly a bone scan) you will get all your results, the hospital will have an MDT meeting and advise you of what they think is the best treatment for you. Depending on your biopsy results and MRI there may well be a choice of treatments.

My personal advice, stay away from Dr Google, use trusted sources if you are looking for information - Prostate Cancer UK. Cancer Research UK and Macmillan.

I will tell you now the hardest part of the journey is the start - the diagnostic tests, waiting for the results BUT once you have a treatment plan life will revert to the "new normal".

The biopsy isn't "nice" but it's an important part of the diagnostic process - here's some information for you:

Transperineal biopsy.

Ask anything, nothing is too trivial and we've all "been there - got the t-shirt".

Hi Steve. The urology doctor said 37 . I know that's high but don't know what it actually means. I'm a young ish fit ( according to  the blood test where all this started!) 62 year old. I'm already dreading the future and unknown.  I'm in a mess and can't snap out of it and think positive . Sorry but I've never been ill or had to deal with hospitals etc and it's freaking me out. Thanks for listening

A PSA of 37 is high for a 62 year old (it should be in the region of 4 or 5 - however Prostate Cancer is very treatable - look at me - initial PSA of 182 and I am fine after 4.5 years, yes I still have cancer but living a fantastic life.

Can I suggest you call our Support Line on 0808 808 00 00 (8am to 8pm 7 days a week) for some reassurance. 

If your hospital has a "Maggies" - this is a cancer charity - feel free to drop in there for a brew or a chat.

Ok, so 37 a bit up be not too much.

When u get the MRI results that will/should tell u more.

The main hope is that any tumour is confined to the gland and not spread outside the gland.

Biopsy confirms aggressivnes of cancer between 6 and 10, obviously hope for a 6/7 or obviously less which could indicate not cancer.

Anyway good luck with biopsy and it does get better, initially always a shock.

Thank you. My biopsy is Saturday with general anesthetic but even that is freaking me out .my missus is doing her best to calm me down bless her but my head is racing 100mph I don't recognise myself and she's never seen me like this. Is this normal. Thanks 

Yes it is fairly normal but u will feel better after the biopsy and then when U get the results  for the biopsy and MRI.

I know exactly how you feel at this early stage of proceedings.

My own prostate history - diagnosed 2016, had radiotherapy and hormone therapy, all OK until early 2024 when it recurred and I embarked on further treatment which has been successful to date with PSA continuing to be undetectable. I'm also living a fantastic life - just been on a 6 week trip to the US to celebrate my 70th birthday, that's the second trip there this year and I'm planning number 3 right now.

Nobody wants prostate cancer and yes, it can be terrifying in the early days, but there is life after treatment. You'll be just fine, but do keep on asking questions on here as and when you need to.

Hi Pompey.   Try not to worry as a high psa doesn’t always mean a bad diagnosis. Once you’ve got the biopsy , mri etc out of the way and know what you are dealing with you can get your head round it all. . You will be fine and get through it.   I had a psa of 22 March 2025.   I am now post op one year and fine.    Ask as many questions as you can think on here no matter how trivial you think they are as you’ll receive lots of info and reassurance.   I know it’s easy to say but you will be fine.     Cheers Simon
