Has anyone experienced ending abiraterone/prednisone /omeprozol treatment regime ? How is the steroid treatment tapered off? Also, does Prostate 3 treatment end at the same time?

  • Hi

I haven’t personally experienced it, but my husband has and it was actually quite hard to give up the prednisolone. He had both drugs for three years and he tapered off HT and steroids slowly, then having to go back on and start again with Prednisolone to then come off it even slower. It was something like, weekly?  - 10mg -5mg - 2.5mg - 2.5mg on alternate days . Then missing a day a week, then 2 days - 3 and so on till the end. Sometimes he would need to do two weeks of each increment. It wasn’t easy. I always thought your own natural steroid production would kick in quite quickly, but in his case it took a while. He became quite weak and tired and started to have aches and pains through the inflammation. Now he’s through that and his body has adjusted.  Others have no problems . I’m not sure about the Abiraterone which was at the same time as any effects of coming off that were possibly over shadowed by the steroid withdrawal and that he was still taking Zoladex HT for some months after.
I think this is probably the worse scenario, so if you have this in mind you will probably be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is, but also be prepared that it can be difficult, but know that you will get through it and be fine.

*The first attempt was something like 10mg - 5mg for 6 weeks and then off . ( it didn’t work and needs to go down slower) pretty obvious now when I look at it.

    Hope that helps

  • Hi, I came off Abiraterone and prednisolone (with Omeprazole) at the end of last year after completing 2 years, my oncologist took a different route to taking me off steroids and sent me to an endocrinologist who moved me from prednisolone to hydrocortisone for 2 months to allow my HPA axis to recover, after those 2 months I tapered the hydrocortisone for a month, I didn't have any side effects of withdrawal. Check my profile for the full details.

For me prostap was prescribed for 3 years, and Abiraterone for 2 years, so I had a year of Prostap left. I did ask to move to Orgovyx as a replacement for prostap for the last year, in hope of a quicker testosterone recovery at the end of treatment.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks a lot for your encouraging response. Hopefully, I'll be able to provide an encouraging response following my treatment cessation.

  • Hi. Thanks for your encouraging response. I've now got a better idea as to what to expect. It'll be another 6 months until I make the transition, but at least I now have a broad outline .
