Blood when passing gas.

I finished my Radiotherapy and hormone therapy in April last year. I also had high dose rate brachytherapy in February last year before my radiotherapy started.
I have been doing ok with side effects this past year but still feel a bit tired and my bowel habits are unpredictable.
Something strange happened today.
I had a bowel movement last night, then again this morning. Then at lunchtime I had to go urgently and had diahorrea. Then around 6pm I urgently needed to go again but it turned out to be mainly gas. When I wiped there was blood on the paper and the pan looks like it had been sprayed with blood which I had passed in what I thought was gas. Blood was fresh and never had this before. Any ideas what I might be? Don’t feel 100% and my mind is racing. Will call helpline tomorrow as closed now but feeling worried.

  • Hello

If this is a new symptom and it's continuing and it's fresh blood I think a call to NHS 111 or a visit to A & E is on the cards.

It's probably something and nothing but best not left.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi  , I am not medically trained but it doesn’t sound too much like an emergency to me but phone 111 if you want a professional answer.  There are lots of possibilities but after RT it isn’t that unusual.  I would always report symptoms to my team, do you have your cancer nurse specialist details to give a bell tomorrow.  It sounds like minor damage (radiation proctitis, diverticulitis or just haemorrhoids (piles)).  Any of these can cause small amounts of blood.  Let us know how you get on.  David
