Hello I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.
2 lesions 1 Gleason 6 3&3 and one Gleason 7 3&4 16 cores taken 4 came back cancerous. Confined to prostate.
I’m not sure in which direction to go next. I’ve been offered two routes active surveillance or surgery. They don’t want to go down radiotherapy route as I’m only 43.
Im really looking for some advice, can any one advise on being on active surveillance (having cancer and not doing anything scares the living daylights out of me) and also can anyone give me advice on the surgery route. I’m leaning towards surgery but looking to hold off until later in the year. I’ve got a young family and I don’t want to upset the things we have planned but don’t want to to risk the cancer spreading. So confused and scared at the same time.
thanks in advance for any advice.
Gary
Ok, so not too bad.
Just to let u know when I was diagnosed in 2013 my largest tumour was 3mm and grew to 13mm over 4 years on active surveillance before starting treatment
So the main thing is yearly MRI to see any tumour growth and also if nearing capsule edge

Hello folks thanks a lot for all your replies and support.
I’ve had quite a long meeting with consultant surgeon and CNS.
They’ve decided that the best thing for me to do is have surgery as they don’t like to leave cancer in 43yr olds if possible. I’ve decided to wait till August to have the surgery as they both agreed it’s a very slow grower and shouldn’t cause any issues between now and then. I was offered surgery at the end of March but unfortunately my father also has prostate cancer and is about to undergo his radiotherapy in March and I’m his only family so needs my help. I’ve also got a 7 year old that has no idea what’s going on so it’ll give me a bit of time to work something out with him.
I really hope that putting it off till august won’t have any effect but I’m trying to juggle with what’s best for both me and my family. Also the financial side as I’m self employed so need to try and get some savings behind me as plan to take as long as needed to fully recover.
thanks again Gary
Hello Gary (Gary73)
Well done in taking the plunge and also for keeping us informed. I wish you well with your surgery when you get round to it in August. Here's a link to some "free stuff"
I appreciate how hard it is talking to a child about daddy's cancer so here's a link to our publication:

Being Self Employed and unable to work is hard (I work for myself) and the only benefit that COULD be available whilst you are unable to work is Universal Credit.
If I can do anything else for you please do let me know.
Best wishes - Brian

Gary, you will feel better having made the decision and I am sure it is the correct one for you.
I told all my grandkids (4-8 years old) that I had cancer in a very nonchalant way and they didn’t bat an eyelid. They react to your emotion so I just talk to them as though it is an everyday occurrence. Have a great summer and come back here if you have any questions or just want to chat. David
Best wishes, David
Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.
Gary, glad you are going to have the surgery

I wouldn't think waiting until August won't have much effect, but I'm not a Doctor.
You have a lot on your plate. Please let us know how things go, there's always someone who will answer your posts.
Take Care
