Hi, I am new on here.

I have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and have decided to have radical prostatectomy. What is the average waiting time to wait for surgery As seems to be taking ages.

  • Hi CW

Think it varies but normally 2-3 months.

U don't mention your stats, hopefully lowish so waiting is ok

  • I was 4 months from initial diagnosis to surgery. Your surgery team should prioritise based on clinical needs.

  • Hi

I was diagnosed in a January 2020 and operated in April 2020. When I talked to the surgeon he said they are supposed to operate 4 weeks after diagnosis but due to Covid etc. everything is delayed, he also said in my case it would make no difference.

  • Hi Steve,

    My stats are
Gleason 3+4=7 ,T2c N0 M02. PSA level 4.0 I had a phone consultation on 4th February where it was confirmed that I had prostate cancer. I made phone call to the Urology coordinator on 9th February telling her that I decided to have radical prostatectomy. She said it would be about six week wait for surgery. Had a meeting with consultant on 23rd February to discuss surgery and was told it would be around 8 weeks wait for surgery. Emailed the Urology coordinator on 17th March, as it had been 5 weeks and not heard anything. She said she spoke to the booking office and it looks like it will be April and that I should hear something in the next couple of weeks. Don't know why it took 11 days from me telling them my decision to be put on waiting list? Phoned booking office 31st March as not heard anything and now it could be May before I have my operation.

A lot of people in your situation would be offered active surveillance  as your stats are low, similar to mine and I went on AS for 4 yesrs.

I think time is on your side so wouldn't worry too much about delays.

I am assuming that tumour size is not too large and not near gland edge, MRI report will tell u that.

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • MRI scan said. I have two small lesions measuring 9mm which was scored as PIRADS 4 and PIRADS 3. The consultant did say that thery were near the edge so may not be able to save nerves, so this is a worry as the longer it goes on the chances of saving these nerves must be diminishing.

  • yes, I agree, I would push for an early appointment if u can , have u thought about Radiotherapy as an alternative treatment.  just a thought

  • I can't see how I can push to have my operation done any sooner.  When I phoned the booking office on Friday, I was told that the consultant would be looking at the list on Monday and that after she has made her decision I would get a call during the week letting me know where I was on the list, but because the amount of people needing this operation it could be May. I decided to have the operation, as if it does not get all the cancer then I could then go for radiotherapy after but can't have operation after radiotherapy if that does not work.

  • yes, true, surgery after RT very difficult if not impossible, May only a few weeks away so suppose Ok.

good thing is your stats are low so  a few more weeks prob ok.

    good luck

    Steve

  • I had a gleeson score of 7 and PSA of 5.9 diagnosed in April with no symptoms removed in Dec 2022.....the waiting is the worst bit ...stay strong
