Hi All

This is my first post so be nice Blush

My Dad is currently in hospital since Christmas, he had Cellulitis which knocked him off his feet.
I’m  a little worried though as he still is bed bound .
his cancer had spread to his hips and he completed 10 rounds of Chemo in October last year .
Im thinking  this is more than just the cellulitis?
Dad lives 300 miles away from me and so the only way I get info is what Dad wants to tell me over the phone  ? He’s quite a private person and although I’m now 53 years of age I do think he trying to protect me by not telling all !
He’s 78 and was diagnosed 2 years ago .
What do you guys think ?

  • it’s difficult to comment on the medical side of things  as we don’t know the full facts etc. But, the NHS is struggling big time right now. One of the big problems which is clogging up the nhs system is being unable to discharge patients from hospital when they are ‘medically optimised for discharge’ ( NHS speak). This means they can’t admit new patients. Hospitals are trying everything within their power to discharge patients in a timely manner!   So, it seems to me that either your Dad remains too poorly to go home or that the hospital don’t think he is ready to go home as they don’t have the  reassurance that he will be able to either care for himself on discharge or that there is not enough put in place to care for him at home.

Hospital staff are very cautious about talking to people on the phone and betraying patient confidence.  When I was working on the wards and a patients relative rang for details etc I used to ask the caller to wait while I asked the patient if they were happy for me to discuss their situation with the person calling. Most patients agreed but there were some who didn’t and we had to comply.

hth and hope he recovers soon.
