  • Hi David

I'm considering proton therapy at the Rutherford in Reading. Did you have prior hormone therapy? Did you have to self fund the treatment?

Best wishes for a speedy recovery

Hi David, I was a self funder and embarked on a 20 session treatment of Proton therapy up in Newcastle. The people and the therapy were amazing. It was painless and only yesterday I was sent home as ‘cured’ as anyone possibly could be. I still need a prostat injection in Feb once my psa levels are checked.
I was diagnosed on 21 Oct 2021 and 10th Dec I am clear. 100% recommend the Rutherford if you have the funding. My view is that I can now aim to earn that money back due to being around.

  • Thanks David, that's very helpful. I saw Dr Lester last month and he said I could be treated without HT and with 7 factions over 3 weeks. My insurance company would not pay for it which is annoying, so I would have to self fund it. You are the first person I have found who has had proton treatment.

Hi David. I was unable to have a ‘spacer’ so the 7 factions wasn’t an option. My 20 I believe we’re a lower dose. I did have 3 of my sessions in Newport due to the Newcastle machine having technical difficulties. Reading/Newcastle and Newport are the same set up. Staff are amazing and they don’t treat you like a ‘cancer victim’, just a person that they aim to mend. My team travelled down to Newport with me to maintain continuity.

    • My business partners husband had proton therapy on his throat earlier this year….. with amazing results and far fewer side effects. It was this reason that I had the confidence to go with The Rutherford.  Because the proton in the UK is a new service and not many people have heard/opted to engage…. you will be treated as if the whole set up is geared around you.
I left yesterday feeling like I was saying goodbye to friends.
Truly amazing considering the dark days following my diagnosis.

    May specialist was called Hans.

    • Hi Louli , happy to try and answer any questions. My grade was Gleason 7 (4+3) stage T3/4 nomx. Psa 10.7. Just call the Rutherford on 0800 210 0402 for help/advice with the bone mets. Cost me £42k upfront. Bupa doesn’t cover it at the moment. This cost covered all my treatment, meds and hotel fees as I needed to stay locally. David
  • Thank you so much David…we have a Gleason 7 also 4+3… with some Ductal carcinoma as well as adenocarcinoma.

so was your disease locally advanced then or confined to Prostate? Was that no lymph nodes and no bone mets??

thankyou this is so helpful.. Slight smile

Well done You are smashing this!
