Hello all , I managed to get my dad another mri scan date , it says on the letter they want a full imagine of his spine I’m presuming there checking for spinal cord compression , does anyone no if he has this what they will do ??

so far dads had

xray

psa level bloods .. 135 at the moment

ct scan either contrast

urine samples

he’s on prostap injection and a tablet to go with that , but he’s been on that a while now

I’m hoping after this mri scan we can move forward with some possible treatment , what are peoples thoughts

dad has prostate cancer spread to hip and 3rd vertebrae:(

he’s been in real pain and since finding out he’s what I will only describe as “ took to his bed “ he’s able to shuffle to the toilet and I am showering in , I have a carer going in and checking on him in the morning , I’m just hoping after this things can start to improve with some sort of treatment

hope you all have a lovely Christmas , me and my brothers are going out for dinner but my dad doesn’t want to so I’m having one plated up for him and taking it to him after our dinner , he said he doesn’t feel like going out as he’s pretty weak tbh so I don’t blame him x

  • Steroids and painkillers are the immediate treatments and depending on the stability of the spine and the pain there could be targeted radiotherapy if needed.

    Bed rest is likely too.

Knowing if there’s a problem in the spine is first to understanding what the solution might be.

If he has numbness or pins and needles in his extremities is a clear sign of nerve pinching, as I’ve been told many times myself. In my case the pain has been reduced to zero with gabapentin so I’ve been lucky, although spinal cord compression was not the problem apparently.

    I wish you all well.

  • Hello

is correct in his post above. They can also use chemotherapy to treat SCC too. My advice is to wait and see what the scan results show and try not to worry too much. Dad's team are doing what they can for him and at least you have a date for the MRI and dad's happy to go for it.

Look after yourself too - dad needs you so take time out for yourself and have a great time with your brothers.

    Best wishes - Brian.
