Appointments after meeting

The consultants did a mdm meeting for my dad who has prostate cancer spread to his hip and 3rd vertebra on Wednesday last week , they then rang me ( as my dad isn’t picking up his phone ) to arrange a appointment for a mri scan , so I’ve managed to get him one this Wednesday

he’s really frail and off his feet and all this has happened pretty quick within a 13 week period really , I think they want to mri to check for spinal cord compression as he’s in a lot of pain and literally bed bound , I’ve had to arrange hospital transport to get him to his scan this time , but at his last ct he actually drove so that’s how fast his declined , I’ve told his gp I Am really worried as he’s off his food big time and I’m just really eager to no what’s happening next …. so far he’s had

cathator in place due to kidney damage

full bloods

urine sample

xray

psa bloods x2 and his level is 135

ct scan with contrast

and he will have this mri on Wednesday

does anyone no what will happen after this mri , she said the results will be pretty quick and then go forward but I’m hoping we can start some sort of treatment , he’s already been on prostap a while now but doesn’t seem to be working anymore so when I say treatment I’m hoping for something a lot more stronger as I would love to have the “ old “ dad back because this new version of him isn’t pleasant to see him in so much pain , he’s been given morphine to take when in agony too

really off his food today he has had one crumpet but still drinking fluids

he’s got a exuse for absolutely everything and is very very demanding to us family members who are trying to look after him , I’m hoping after this scan we can start to move forward

ps my dad isn’t accepting this all very well so it’s been down to me to sort everything and he’s refused a lot of things but with my push he’s going to this scan he needs to !! For his own sanity , this isn’t about me it’s about him but it’s taking a massive strain on me due to him being so hard work

I’ve told his doctor eveything and all they say is he is clinically well , doubt it from what I can see

also anyone who has prostate cancer and has read this or any carers looking after someone , does there urine smell as my dads is awful !!!!!! He told him but again in denial

wish us luck for Wednesday

thankyou xx

  • Hi  , talk to the GP and explain about the urine smell.  Either insufficient liquid intake or needs checking in case he has a UTI.  Doubt if it is cancer related, although others might have some thoughts on that.

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Hi

your dads itinerary should not smell . Please try and get a urine sample from the catheter . He may have a UTI.

By the sounds of it you could do with support yourself. As carer you can gain access to support networks either with MacMillan or if you have a local Maggie Centre as you can just drop in and if one of their councillors is available or call them and make an appointment.

not being nosey but if you are not working or working .
you can apply for carers allowance  (You can work as many hours as you like as long as you meet the 35 hours of care requirement AND your earnings stay under the £196 limit) it’s worth a look into it .

please take care of yourself too as it’s hard watching a parent who is also struggling .

    hugs to you both

  • Unfortunately dad didn’t attend his mri today , the patient transport came to pick him up at 10.30 when his appointment wasn’t until 2.00 and he wasn’t ready as my brother was getting him ready and wasn’t going until 12

it’s absolutely messsed everything up now and he’s so poorly I am just heartbroken because I don’t no when he will be able to get another appointment now :(

I just don’t no what to do next

  • Stay as calm as you can, firstly. Then explain it to your GP and go through the process again until it does work.

Your strength is important. Managing him for your family should be talked about so there’s one point of contact, but at least then the names and faces are able to catch future problems early.

Keep you dad talking and inquisitive that’s the number one tonic.

    Wishing you all well.

    Good luck and

  • So sorry to read this . Contact the consultant and explain and ask if he can rearrange an urgent MRI with timely transport . Tbh it actually might be worth the consultant getting your dad admitted for a few days to save him being rushed for the scan . Hugs
