Hi All

I had a biopsy today and I can't believe how uncomfortable i am. I have pain which is a dull ache. Pain killers dont seem to touch it. Does the last for days?

  • I must agree with   the most painful part of my biopsy was the local anesthetic injections. I felt nothing of the actual core sample taking. For me it was as Brian describes 'Like shelling peas'. I had a young nurse (they are all 'young' when you are in your seventies) holding my hand and we had quite a few laughs during the procedure especially when I likened my position to birthing.

Yes be prepared for the tomato ketchup.

In my case, I don't know if all hospitals use the same system, the consultant sealed the access points with some form of glue. No problem until a few days later it needs peeling off, that did bring tears to my eyes!

  • A quick smile tale - Had my first in February, I say first because I suffered a second not long after!

I was told after 20 samples were taken that there may be slight discomfort and that paracetamol was to be taken should this occur. I returned home and felt extremely sorry for myself. Went to bed and on a number of occasions suffered quite sharp pain when I moved. next day this continued until I showered. Tentatively exploring the area with my hand I discovered two elastoplasts between the cheeks of my bum that had turned and were twisted on my extremely hairy buttocks! Problem resolved. When I mentioned them to my Urologist he stated that he did not charge extra for waxing!

  • My first biopsy try under local was a disaster, to start with I wasn’t over impressed with the surroundings it was like being in a glorified broom cupboard See no evil  then the ultrasound machine wouldn’t work properly so the camera that’s inserted up your behind was in and out like the okey kokey while they tried to get it to work, after about 20 mins of this they sent me out while they got a tech guy to fix it

so back in and handled the first anesthetic needle into the gland ok but when the first biopsy was take I literally leapt out of the chair in pain , it was aborted then as I couldn't have taken another 20 of them

general anesthetic was far more civilised

I must add though I’m not convinced the anesthetic was applied properly under the first local option as afterwards I couldn't feel any numbness down there whatsoever and yet when I had the general where they still apply local to the area as well I felt numb down there hours later

  • I'm sure I read somewhere that in Australia the normal process is to give a general anaesthetic rather than local.  Sounds far more civilised to me although I realise it would be far mor resource intensive for the NHS to do this.
