Hello, my husband Mike has extensive skeletal metastases. He used to play tennis but is afraid of causing damage if he plays now.  Does anyone else in his situation play any sport or exercise please?
with thanks

  • Hello Help, I think I've responded to you before? I, like your partner, have widespread skeletal metastases but am very much active and exercising. I think if there is pain when exercising, playing tennis etc, then he needs to be wary, but if treatment is working, it should be fine. I had back and shoulder pain before diagnosis so stopped gym exercise, but when I began treatment the pain went and I resumed this.

Data is showing that exercise is proving to be an excellent way to combat treatment side effects and cancer itself. If your husband enjoys tennis, it seems a shame that he would stop?

Whilst there shouldn't be damaged caused, as long as treatment has started to work and he has no pain, tennis shouldn't be an issue - BUT please remember that we are not medically qualified so running it past the oncologist first is important!

    Good luck,

  • Thank you once again BrightonBiker, your  response is like a breath of fresh air and really appreciated.  It is so encouraging to hear you are doing so well.

  • Hi Moira ( ),  if Mike isn’t in pain playing, I think he should try and keep the tennis going.  I can’t remember Mike’s age, but the biggest risk is probably in falling and breaking something.  The benefits playing aren’t just sporting but are social as well and it gives a feeling of normality.  I play once a week but during some treatments have been too fatigued, but I am 76.

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Hello David, thank you for your lovely response. Mike really appreciated your guidance and is feeling more positive. He is 81 but used to be fit and active, he loved playing tennis and has been quite down recently. Thank you so much.

    Best wishes
