Bladder Cancer

Hello there

My husband completed his radio therapy treatment last Thursday and is not due to see the Specialist in charge until 9th July.

Sorry if I seem to be obtuse but how will they know if the treatment has been successful or not.  Can they tell by blood tests?  His tumour was removed on 15 February.

  • Hi  . Good to hear your husband has completed his RT. The treatment keeps working for a few weeks after the treatment finishes. The RT inflames the bladder lining, so they have to give it more time to heal before having a look. The follow up is usually biopsies taken under GA. I finished my treatment in the January. Had to wait till May for them to have a look, and then a further few weeks for results. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • I am not aware of a blood test which would answer your question directly, but the blood test results could show how well the body has recovered from the treatments. In my case, radiotherapy was followed by a CT scan several weeks after the last session. The oncology consultant then discussed the scan results in an appointment a few weeks after that. In some cases a flexible cystoscopy (camera via urethra) is arranged before the Specialist has the chat with the patient. As there are many variables in most treatment plans, the path for each patient can vary considerably. Waiting for results and reviews is often a tense time but the apparent slow pace is usually a balance between waiting for healing/recovery from a stage in the treatment, lining up facilities for post recovery tests and then gathering results for review by the specialist, many of whom have to serve more than one hospital. Best wishes to both of you. July will soon come and go, hopefully providing some answers and favourable news.  Ray x
