Hi everyone my name is Brian and was diagnosed with bladder cancer around a year and a half ago. While having a checkup yesterday they said my prostate was enlarged so they took blood sample to check for cancer. I have been put on contiflo xl 400 micrograms I have only had 2 so far 1 yesterday and 1 this morning. I'm finding after a few hours of taking it I get dizzy and feeling sick has anyone else had any experience with this medication? Thanks Brian.

  • Hi Brian, and welcome to the forum, though in the nicest way, I hope it's not or long, Contiflo, or Tamulosin, as it's better known is familiar to many of us on here, but side effects are generally mild and uncommon, but it can lower your blood pressure, leading to dizziness and nausea, which you must inform urology about, I'm sure It's a typo, you do mean 400 micrograms and not milligrams.

  • Yes sorry it was meant to be micrograms. Thanks for the reply.

  • Hi Kinsman,

As eddiel has mentioned, Contiflo (Tamsulosin) can lower your blood pressure & it was something that was mentioned to me when I was given it.  It was counted as a plus point that I already had high blood pressure!

Feeling dizzy is one of the known side effects when first taking the medication so it's best to avoid drinking alcohol (which can increase the blood pressure lowering effect) until you see how you get on with it.

Although it's suggested taking it in the morning, having checked with the hospital if it would be an issue for me, I actually take mine in the evening to help reduce overnight loo visits & I also find it easier to remember to take it then.

Probably best to let Urology know about the dizziness & nausea & you could then ask them if taking it in an evening before bed would be an option for you to try.

    Best Wishes

    Brian

  • Thanks for the information I appreciate it.

  • I was advised by a Macmillan nurse that Tamsulosin takes 2hrs to work and it lasts about 6hrs so I take mine about 2hrs before bed and it takes care of the night when most have problems.
