We are often asked about whether we can do anything diet wise to help ourselves when diagnosed with prostate cancer. This has just arrived in my inbox and I think there are a few things which will make a difference. There is also a section on exercise and food.

  • Hey

just listened to it. A bit sceptical as in my opinion he is verging towards vegan . My OH has either porridge or eggs for breakfast and I doubt I can persuade him to stop eating eggs.  Then it’s a snack of fruit mid day. Dinner is either fish, chicken and occasional beef with lots of veg.

just need to find a balance to try and sort out the liver issue caused by the Abiraterone. It’s funny as I had been looking on line for specific diets for this.

    hope all is good

  • Hi Liz. He is advocating a more plant based diet and like everything you adjust your lifestyle with what you feel you can live with. One thing which was interesting was that he believes that diet and exercise can influence PSA particularly in men with low risk prostate cancer.

  • Hi AH, he also said all Scots cook their oats for 24 hours, that we all have a beef fry up after getting drunk the night before, and we should have a stomach massage to help our bowels...none of my specialist cancer trained masseurs would ever massage the lower abdomen for anyone with PCa, I  think we can all agree a good diet and exercise is a big positive.

Hi Liz, if  OH liver issue caused by Abiraterone are SEE, brassica's and carrots will help lower his numbers.

  • Hi

what’s the liver issue with the liver & Abiraterone? BW also had wobbly liver function tests. Not dramatically bad, but combined with other “off” bloods it all builds up. Early on his potassium was very low, common side effect of Abiraterone, a banana a day sorted that out. I’ve always gone heavy on the darkest greens as well. Hi protein and low fat. Eggs are big in this house too.

  • Hi Lorraine,

Bilirubin is normal. his ALT is 115 bas of Monday.so they have dropped the Abiraterone to 1 till we see the Oncologist 19th June .

OH is worried that it will all the PC to restart its nonsense. This morning he was in bits so we’re heading to the Maggie Centre to have a chat .

He has a healthy diet with lots of greens including kale . I also make lots of soups to help with the bowels as he can become quite constipated at times . The eggs are straight from our local farm so not battery eggs.  Meat/ chicken  is also from a local game dealer.

hope all is well & hugs

  • I did take away one thing from this and that's a link between eggs and high risk disease. There is reputable research linking the two so I think I will be reducing my egg intake based on this.

My wife thinks this is OTT (I do enjoy her scrambled eggs) but the research is credible so I think I'll play it safe.

  • My husband has chronic kidney disease and his nephrologist recommended reducing eggs to 3 whites a week. These are recommendations and it is up to us to look at the evidence and make our own choices but if it starts a conversation and makes us look at our own diet and lifestyle then it has done its job.

  • Sorry Liz, SEE,serum enzyme elevation.
