On Tuesday I started a holiday from Manchester Airport.  As we went through security we were directed to a lane which was trialling the new process whereby you don’t have to unload all your electrical items or fluids from your hand luggage. We were told to remove everything from our pockets including tissues.  The new full body scanner is an enhanced 3D piece of kit.  I triggered something and was subject to a frisking; particularly of my crutch.  I was asked if I had anything in my trousers and promptly said, yes, an incontinence pad (following RP). I was whisked off to a private booth where I had to put my hands in the wet pad and then rub them on a “wand” which was then taken away for analysis for drugs.

If you’re like me, left with total incontinence after surgery please be aware of what indignity, and concern to your partner, may await the start of a holiday.

  • I'm somewhat surprised that airport security and, especially checking for drugs is so archaic.  I've just retired after 20 years of being a drug & alcohol chain of custody officer and i have never needed that process

    • Having been pulled over for random explosives swabbing in Barbados and Paris in the last 5 weeks or so, I could not agree more with you! If I had been handling explosives I would have either worn gloves or washed my hands after! I would have hidden the explosives well and certainly would not have hidden anything in or near my iPad! Likewise, with gloves on, the zips on my hand luggage would not have been contaminated.  I don’t mind cooperating with security as it is for everyone’s safety. I do mind being treated with a lack of respect for personal dignity.I do wonder, though, what they are doing about babies and toddlers wearing nappies  or sanitary towels worn by menstruating women!

    • ps- my hands, bag zips and iPad were declared ‘ clean’ and I was allowed to continue!
  • I wonder why the scan picked this up.  I always wear incontinence pads - even before PCa as I have an overactive bladder and was one of the first through one of these new body scanners and nothing came up then.  I think if I remember rightly I had a Tena mens pad on at that time.  It may be something in the pad make up or the "keep dry" crystals that triggers the scanner.  so, as far as I know whatever is in Tena mens pads doesn't trigger the scanner but maybe others do.  Maybe worth looking into?  all of us will have to try going through there with different pads on!
