Nervous daughter

My dad 66, had a routine blood test that showed his PSA was 14.7, and when it was repeated a month later, it was the same. He has no urinary symptoms. His GP referred him for an MRI, and about two weeks after the scan, he was told that a targeted transperineal biopsy of the prostate was being recommended based on findings . He was placed on the waiting list, which we were told could take around six weeks. A few weeks later, my dad rang his GP because he was feeling very anxious about waiting, and the GP read from the mri report that it was likely to be prostate cancer but appeared to be confined to the prostate.
Since around the time of the second blood test, he’s had ongoing groin pain and discomfort in thighs and scrotum — he thinks he may have strained it when lifting something heavy, but the pain hasn’t fully settled. He saw the doctor again to check if it was related to the prostate, but an X-ray of his pelvis and thighs came back clear, as did the initial MRI in terms of spread.

His biopsy is now booked for 15th October, which will be about nine weeks after the MRI he had. We’re both very worried that things might have changed in that time, and he’s become increasingly anxious as he waits for the procedure. What’s the likely outcome, do you think pain is related to prostate ?

  • Hi CD and welcome

From what you have said doesn't look too bad.ok probably is PC but PSA not particularly high and good if contained in the gland.

I know that waiting times seem like an eternity but it is next week and if ends up being a low key affair then not too much to be concerned about.

When possible it would be worth asking tumour size in mm which MRI should show , obviously the smaller the better, hopefully 12mm or less.

Anyway best news is if contained which means potentially curable,

    Good luck with the biopsy

    Best wishes

    Steve

Ps , pain probably unrelated but please remember I'm not medically qualified

  • Prostate cancer is generally very slow growing so a 2-3 month wait for a biopsy is unlikely to make any significant difference to the diagnosis/outcome.

Hope all goes well with the biopsy and again take your time to consider all your treatment options and find the right pathway for your circumstances.

    Best of Luck Rob
