Biopsy results wait time

Had my TP biopsy 13th Feb 2025 (which wasn't particularly pleasant) , and still not heard a thing.  Phoned up the hospital today (27/02) and was told I would be discussed next Tuesday 4th March and then they would probably arrange an appointment for me (or could just send a letter/phone).

The wait time is stressing me out, just want to know one way or another.  I don't know if this is the same experience everyone else has had?

As per my bio, I have a LOW psa of 1.47, no symptoms, in good health, but a Bupa health check (paid for by my employer) in December, found something on a DRE, so referred for an MRI which found a lesion (fully contained to the prostate) which may or may not be cancerous.   I've spent many hours on this forum and Prostate Cancer UK forum to fully understand the process and options available, but clearly none of that can happen without the biopsy results one way or another.  TBH, I'm beginning to wish I hadn't had the health assessment, as I would have normally just been sent on my way with a PSA of 1.47 and not had to go through all the stress of potentially having prostate cancer ...

  • It's easy to say but much harder to do, in practice, but I wouldn't stress about the time it's taking to get your results.  As I understand it, the samples taken at the biopsy need to "grown" in the lab and that generally takes 2 weeks, minimum.

For me, it was exactly 4 weeks between the biopsy and the meeting with the MDT to discuss the results.

    Fingers crossed for you.

  • Hi dedward and welcome

Actually it's good that u had the biopsy done because sometimes a very low PSA can show a more aggressive cancer on the biopsy not that I'm saying that's the case here.

But probably the best news is that it's contained in the gland which obviously does make things a lot easier.

So if 6/7 Gleeson, non aggressive or 8+ Gleeson , more aggressive still potentially curable.

Only a few days to wait now and of course it may not be cancer so ,fingers crossed.

    Let us know

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • Hello

All Health Authorities work slightly differently and 2 weeks from biopsy to results being known is pretty quick.  MDT next Tuesday is also pretty fast.

It depends where you live but your results may or may not be on the NHS App, your GP may or may not be aware of them or if your hospital uses "Patients Know Best or My Chart" they could be there - otherwise it's waiting for the MDT meeting results.

If you need any help with the stress - please do give the Support Line a call on 0808 808 00 00 (8am to 8pm 7 days a week) They have access to lots of resources.

Please do let us know how you get on - when you do get your results.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • In my case, it was about 2.5 weeks from biopsy to the appt at which I was informed of the outcome.  I believe that this is at the lower end of the NHS range of about 2 - 8 weeks.

Best wishes for a good outcome.

  • After 2 weeks I rang the prostate cancer specialist nurse and asked for my husband’s results ( with his consent, of course). She gave them to us over the phone.

best of luck and fingers crossed there is nothing to worry about!

  • I would say that your timing is just about par for the course. My Biopsy was on 8/05 and the letter confirming my diagnosis was produced on 06/06. An MDT had already been formed and had discussed my case in detail. I have had numerous scans and consultations since then - started HT on 01/07, finished my RT on 23/11. 1st follow up on 28/01 - all looks pretty good so far. Don't panic !!.........they know what they are doing.

  • The waiting is a nightmare.

It bothered me that it was taking so much time when I was being diagnosed, and it still bothers me when I see other people going through the same anxiety I did.

There is a YouTube channel run by the Prostate Cancer Research Institute in America which publishes information videos on a regular basis. Whenever I need reassurance I go to this channel because I find the videos reassuring.

Just a couple of days back I was looking through the videos and found this one:

    https://youtu.be/aotF2SPzCmU?si=nbwRm6oC_AANpLNb

It's title is "How much time do you have to test Prostate Cancer?"

It is an interesting discussion, and one which may help because although you are wracked with the same anxieties I had, it is very likely that it is not damaging your prospects.

I only dare post this because others on this forum have recommended the channel, which was how I found it, and the thrust of the information was also given to me by the CNS who did my biopsy.

He told me that prostate cancer grows more slowly than other cancers, even an aggressive one, and that there was time to get it right.

    It helped me hold on.

I hope you get the answers you need, and that your anxiety is relieved.

    Changed, but not diminished.
  • The waiting is definitely torture and until you hear from the horse's mouth of course you will worry. My husband was told  biopsy results would take 5-6 weeks, but after 2 weeks he rang the nurse about something else and she told him that the results were on his notes and did he want to know what they were? She told him in very general terms but it confirmed that it was cancer and  it had spread into his pelvis. We then had an unecessary delay as the urologist should have also referred John for a bone scan and because that was missed somewhere in the system (did the urologist forget, did an admin clerk miss doing it? we will never know)  his oncology appointment didn't get arranged until John rang the Macmillan nurse again and he  sorted it out with a bone scan date sent for a few days later and once done his oncology appointment came....so things do get missed but twice now it's the nurse who has come to the rescue with information we didn't know would be available yet, but it was, and speeding up an unecessary delay. I would urge you to ring the nurse and say how anxious you are getting. I promise you your concerns will be heard and you will be reassured and maybe even given your results.

  • I was told on day of biopsy ,there would be a 5 week wait ,having already had PC confirmed through mri .and bone scan clear ,Then biopsy results took 8 weeks gleason 4+5,urology then asked for pet scan which found bone met in pelvic area diagnosed stage 3 gleason 9 urology

Upgraded gleason 9 stage 4 oncology

Diagnosed march 18th  24  started treatment last week june 24 way over 62 days I was initially told

Phoned and emailed was asked ,if I would kindly be a bit more patient

When treatment finally started treatment as been excellent and last PSA 0.1 so  onwards and upwards

So you will get there depending where you live but times differ ,good luck

  • Sit back have a cuppa and relax, your PSA is normal, if it is a cancer contained in the prostate you will live a normal life span, many on here wish we were in your position, please read and understand having your prostate removed if it is a cancer is the wrong way to go these days, watchful waiting is the way to go and in 10 years time your PSA rises they will wil it out, take care and you have no reason to spoil your time worrying
