Abiraterone without steroids

Hi All

Has anyone tried abiraterone without the steroids they prescribe alongside?

I'm just looking at options as the steroids raise my blood sugar and I have just got the result of my 3 monthly HbA1C test (as I'm
diabetic) and it has gone up to 59 from 50

I just wondered how bad the side effects of abiraterone without steroids would be as I cant talk to the diabetic nurse until 18/3/25

Getting pissed off with it all

I used to be fairly well controlled but since taking steroids that's gone

Yesterday all I had to eat all day was 2 digestive biscuits for breakfast and my blood sugar was over 12 all day until they wore off around 6pm

I just wondered if anyone had tried without steroids

I'm not going to stop taking them but it will give me more knowledge when I talk to the Oncology consultant on the 21st

Thanks

Martin

  • Good morning Martin. I can only find one phase II trial on this which seems to indicate that it may be a possibility for select patients. Blood pressure and potassium levels need to be well monitored.

  • Good Morning Martin (

I am so sorry to read of your problems, indeed my HbA1C readings increased once I started on Hormone Therapy. The diabetic nurse was convinced I was having issues and I had to take my PIL (Patient Information Leaflet) into the GP and show him one of the side effects was increased HbA1C.

A chat with our practice pharmacist, a slight change in medication and my target was increased to 50 (I am at 45 on my last test in November).

Perhaps a word with your GP/Pharmacist might help?

    Best wishes - Brian.
