Biopsy Results - Advice Please

Hello to everyone. This is my first post.

I will shortly be attending a consultation to discuss my prostate biopsy results.

I'm not sure what to expect and what information I should be provided during the consultation. Advice from forum members would be very much appreciated.

It will be more than 100 days since my urgent referral for suspected cancer. The experience so far has not all been good. Aged 59, I have slightly elevated PSA and PIRADS 4.

Thank you.

  • Hello  - A warm welcome to the Community - I am so sorry to find you here.

I assume the meeting you are having is the MDT meeting where your biopsy results will be known and the meeting is to work out the best course of treatment.

Your results will be a staging - TNM and Gleason Score (Mine in T3aN0M0 Gleason 9 (5 + 4). This gives you an idea of how aggressive the cancer is and along with your PSA and position of the cancer in the gland - your team should be able to give you your treatment options.

Without your diagnosis (but having said a slightly elevated PSA) - Watchful waiting, Surgery, Hormone/radiotherapy or Brachytherapy will be the options I would guess.

I hope this helps - please come back with any questions.

    Kind Regards- Brian.

  • Hi  ,  like  has said, you will get your staging info which will help us to give you answers to any questions you might have.

My advice to you is try and take someone with you to your meeting (some suggest recording it if the Consultant is willing).  It was overwhelming to get a diagnosis and in my case, bad news numbed my brain so I didn’t take everything in.  You are at the worst part of this journey and it will get better.  Keep us posted and ask anything.  Best wishes David

  • Hi Brian,

Thank you for the information and your support. I'm assuming it's the MDT meeting which will hopefully be confirmed in the appointment letter. I will make some notes during the meeting so I can refer back and process what has been discussed.

    Kind regards, Colin.

  • Hi David,

Thank you for the information and your support. I will be making some notes during the meeting as I think it will be difficult to absorb all that is discussed. I'm not good in a hospital environment so it's very daunting.

    Best wishes, Colin.

  • Hi Colin (Magika),

I agree with David2017 about having someone with you at the meeting as there is a lot of information to take in & 4 ears are better than 2.  If you already have some questions you want to raise at the meeting then it's best to write them down in a notebook beforehand & then take it with you.  You will probably find that most will be covered anyway in the discussion but at least you won't get home & then think damn, I forgot to ask about that.

    Best wishes

    Brian

  • Hi Magika I am only just ahead of you as I had my results last week and I am 64 . It was still a shock when the results were given and panic sets in but the nurse with the consultant soon calmed me down and now I have a pathway for treatment ,there will be lots of information to take in so make sure you take a notebook and take notes so you don’t miss anything . It’s the waiting before hand that’s the worse .
Good luck with the meeting and let’s hope the results are what you want .

  • Hi Brian,

Thank you for the advice and your support. There are some questions for the consultant which I will make a note of. If treatment is required, I'm hoping it will be provided with no delays. The consultation will be over 100 days since referral which has been stressful to deal with.

    Best wishes, Colin.

  • Hi Timmy2,

Thank you for the advice and your support. I'm so sorry to hear of the shock you experienced.

I do hope a nurse is present during my consultation because I will find the meeting difficult. I agree, the waiting is very stressful. Wishing you the best success with your treatment.

    Kind regards, Colin.

  • Hi again Colin,

If it's anything like my meeting, a clinical nurse specialist was also in the meeting along with the consultant.  They were both very friendly & more importantly knowledgeable & the discussion never felt rushed with plenty of time allowed for questions.  I'm generally a very relaxed person & also told I have a weird sense of humour so we even had a few laughs during the discussion.

Good luck, I hope it all goes well for you.

    Best Wishes,

    Brian
