Oedema after chemotherapy

Hi all.

My husband finished chemotherapy on the 11th October and a week later developed oedema in the calf and ankle of one leg. He has a low salt, low carb, balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg, and drinks 1.5 to 2l fluid a day. His mobility is limited but he does still potter. Blood pressure normal, although he is on a very low dose beta blocker. The oedema is going down with gentle massage and elevation. He has blood tests tomorrow so I will have an idea of how things are on that front then and will be in contact with the medical oncologist with the results tomorrow afternoon - any excuse to talk to the dishy Greek God. Has anyone else experienced this and if so do you have any tips.

  • Hi, sorry I can't help by giving you an answer to your question but just wanted to say that I hope the oedema soon clears and you can get some answers from Mr dishy x

  • Hi Shar. Thanks for that.

Blood tests were excellent although a very slight rise in PSA. Mr Dishy is not worried at the moment and we will discuss it with him when we see him on the 15th after the scans on the 10th. The oedema is probably a side effects from the chemo even though he took steroids around each infusion. It should continue to go down with time. Normally the only other thing we could do, apart from what we are already doing, is take NSAID's but that is not an option due to the chronic kidney failure. Interestingly with this blood test the creatinine and, therefore, eGfr has suddenly improved by quite a bit so good news for anyone worried about kidney damage as a result of acute or chronic effects from compression of the ureters or urethras.

Definitely enjoying not having to think about the next round of chemo. Busy now getting ready for olive picking but still a little warm for it at 27 Celsius.
