psa FALL

Hi

It's been a while since I last posted. Back in August I had a PSA reading of 8.02 (rising from 5.0 in March) and a MR prostate scan which showed zero PI-Rad's. However my latest PSA from last week has come out at 4.94. It seems a bit puzzling as my symptoms seem to getting worse; more toilet visits both day and night, more dribbling, more urgency etc! Can I consider this latest drop in PSA a positive thing? Could my prostate be growing yet my PSA falling?

Thanks for your time

  • Hi Pegman

Good that MRI not showing anything, , your urinary issues could be down to infection or BPH., These can elevate the PSA.

Perhaps ask about thise possibilities although would have thought must have been aware.

Keep checking PSA and have another MRI at some stage

  • I had urinary problems four years or so ago.  I was back and forth to the toilet as many as six times a night so my doctor had my PSA tested and though it was not unusually high she had me undergo a biopsy which turned out negative and it was diagnosed as an enlarged prostate.  After a year of monthly testing my PSA was quite high and a further biopsy showed  positive.  My consultant put me on ‘watchful waiting’ and as my PSA reached 32 I was put on monthly hormone injections.  My last PSA reading after a couple of years of treatment dropped  to 0.8 and now I am awaiting my first six monthly injections.  I have never been a worrier and took my prostate cancer diagnosis quite calmly as did my good lady wife.  My prognosis is good and as long as it all stays where it is I am happy with that.  Depending on my daily liquid intake my nightly visits can be anything from three to six.  At 72 I jokingly say that my visits are good exercise.  I am very fortunate but others are not so.  I often tell men in my circles to take serious note of problems down under before they become serious.

  • Interesting story Ossie, glad things ok now, matter of interest when the first biopsy showed negative was a MRI scan done beforehand because this can show more.

  • After the first biopsy I had a hip X-ray showing nothing untoward and after after the second an positive biopsy I had an MRI which again showed the same.  The consultant told me that the cancerous cells were contained.  It does not mean that it will stay like that but but as the consultant put it.  It is as if the cancer has been slowed from 100 mph to just 5 mph.  The slower the better.

  • I went to my doctor about what I refereed to as an ageing bladder.  After she examined me Iwas told that I had an enlarged prostate so was sent for a PSA test and as that was on the high side a  biopsy was carried out which proved to be negative.  I was told the an enlarged prostate caused urinary problems, particularly at night and that any liquid intake should not be less than two hours before bedtime.  My PSA continued to rise and a further biopsy proved positive.  After a period of watchful waiting a course of hormone injections was carried out monthly and from a high of 32 my PSA dropped to 0.8 and soon I begin a six monthly course of injections,  How ever my nightly visits can be anything from two to six depending on my daily liquid intake, (I love teas from around the world) and what I eat.  Daytime urinary problems are not what they were but can still catch me out.

I am told by my consultant that it is the enlarged prostate which brings the urinary problem not the high PSA.
