Hi all, second post from me but this time my husband is keen to hear from others in a similar situation.

briefly, he was diagnosed at the end of May with stage 4,  Gleason 9, spread to pelvic wall and multiple lymph nodes.  the oncologist said prognosis 18-24 months but if treatment works then maybe 4 years.  My husband is finding this prognosis so difficult to comes to terms with.  I have tried to reassure him that this may not be the case as I have read on here of lots in a similar situation that have surpassed this time.
We are still in complete shock and my husband still feels really angry as he had been back and forth to see the GP for a couple of years with, what we know now, many symptoms of prostate cancer and maybe if he hears about guys in a similar situation then it may help.

thank you all x

  • That’s understandable. Take each day as it comes.

I joined the support group this evening. My father has been diagnosed with Gleason 9 and it has spread to his lymph nodes. He didn’t / doesn’t have any symptoms. I am saddened to read that so many men on this forum didn’t have any symptoms either. It’s been a lot to process.

Until all of this, I’d only ever heard of people having cancer, beating cancer or sadly not beating cancer. I haven’t heard of anyone living with cancer… I didn’t even know you could do HT to try and shrink it.

How did you begin to process your diagnosis? Do you have any tips on how I can support my dad?

    Sending you an invisible cuddle

  • Send me a msg mate and I’ll reply with my contact details to talk more in depth if you’d like

    Regards

  • Hi

Whilst I am not at the same stage as your husband, I can only imagine the shock to receive such news. I must admit, my oncologist was a little more optimistic when I asked several "What if" questions.

I recently read a book by Tim Baker "Patting the Shark" who was diagnosed with Stage 4 PC and the cancer had spread to several parts of his body. The book is about his journey and how he dealt with his cancer. I must admit, I felt he was a little dramatic and pretty selfish. The important message about the book is that 10 years later he is still doing well. He just so happen to live close to me on the Gold Coast and is living a full live which includes surfing.

I have a second friend of mine that was diagnosed with terminal PC and was given a few months to life. He spend almost the entire December of 2021 in Palliative Care. In January 2022 he walked out of Palliative Care and 2.5 years later he is still doing really well and travelling the world.

There is is hope, both these two people I mentioned were not prepared to accept their prognosis and decided to fight. I firmly believe PC to be a massive mental fight for all and not only the male but all of those around them.

    All of the best!

  • Hi Perry, welcome to the Prostate Group.

Like you, before I was diagnosed I'd basically only heard of people having cancer, beating it or not.  My eyes have been widely opened.

Luckily I am now in Remission and there are many others who are not!

I had no symptoms, it was just lucky I was diagnosed when I was!

  • Hi Munster

Yes we had many "What if Questions" when I was diagnosed "Terminal" last June 2023.

The consultant was very downbeat upon diagnosis and we left the appointment with  incredible "FEAR"

Yes there is very much "HOPE"

We have to "FIGHT" this "Bas****" "Tooth and Nail"

Thanks for the info on the book!!!
