Hi everyone,
My dad has been having hormone treatment with Prostap 3. He was due to be having the treatment for 2 years. I have seen another thread on the forum about confusion over whether injections should be every 3 months or 12 weeks, which would make a difference in terms of how many injections you would actually get over a 2 year period.
My dad always had in mind that 3-monthly injections over 2 years would mean 4 injections a year and so 8 in total. I know it is not always as simple as that however this is how he was helping himself through it - using a “countdown”. He was disappointed when he was told he should get another injection - number 9 - but was able to rationalise that to himself given his 8 x 12 weekly injections didn’t fully take him to 2 years.
He was then advised to have another injection after this, which has been harder for him to accept as he does not fully understand the rationale. I should say he also had radiotherapy and all his blood tests so far have been extremely positive in terms of his psa level. He is due to meet with his nurse next week and will of course take on their advice.
We were really curious about other people’s experience of this. How many injections of Prostap 3 did other people receive for a 2 year course?
Thanks in advance.
It's definitely 12 weeks and not 3 months between Prostap3 injections, so a bit more than 4 per year. For a 3 year course I started with 2 Prostap1 injections followed by 12 Prostap3. So 14 in total.
Thank you Seamus47.
Yes, agree with the 12 week interval. I think this is why he was confused. Whether 12 weekly or 3 monthly, he had his first injection January 2020 and had further injections every 12 weeks and then has been advised to have another in Feb 2022.
We wondered whether we were making assumptions about how many injections that would mean.
At the end of the day you follow medical advice but he had his heart set on being done now so it has been disappointing for him.
Hi Seamus
It's all a bit odd. I had 2 years of Prostap, and the nurse would tell me when the next one was due - it was always 3 months - even for short months like February.
A new nurse gave me the penultimate dose, and told me the last one would be due 12 weeks later. When I queried it, she told me it wouldn't matter so long as I had it within a week of the date she gave me. This covered the date when I thought it was due.
All very confusing for me!

Stuart
Hi Stuart,
Do you mind if I ask how many injections you had over the 2 years?
Thanks
Lorraine.
Hi Lorraine
No problem. However I really didn't count , I just turned up when they told me.
Not helped you I'm afraid!
Regards
Stuart
The medical profession always talk in months as when they give you tablets for a month and you get 28 enough for 4 weeks and to me 4 weeks is a medical month. I had them for 3 years and never counted the number just went along when told too.
I wish him the very best of luck with his treatment. Regards Reg
Hi Lorraine, I had a course of 28 Bicalutamide tablets and I will have 6 Zoladex injections, 1 a month, I’m having my 3rd injection tomorrow. I will be having 23 radiotherapy sessions starting next month, as for the injections they really have taken there toll with me, hot flushes, tiredness, headaches and some mood swings, but I suppose it’s the price we have to pay, regards Pete
