Questions to ask my consultant

Diagnosed with PC last December and started chemo in February.

Completed 10 of 12 sessions of chemo and have a face to face meeting with consultant next Monday.

In previous discussions he has said my tumour marker has reduced significantly and from my halfway scan the tumour has also reduced, so chemo seems to be working.

He wants to discuss ‘future treatment’ - TBH, I had not thought much beyond getting through the chemo.  He tells me that further chemo is possible, I could take a break and then return for more treatment.  There may be other options.

I seem to be coping reasonably well with the chemo (apart from tiredness and some diarrhoea), and I know it will be my choice - balancing the chemo impact with a hoped for improvement in my condition.  But I would not mind a break, if only for 4/6 weeks.  The 2 weekly chemo cycle is very restricting.

My main concerns are whether I would be reducing the effectiveness of the chemo by taking a break and would I have any adverse reaction to chemo when I went back to it - my 1st two cycles were not very pleasant.

Has anyone on the forum been through this option?  What was it like?

Plus……..can anyone suggest any other questions I should be asking the consultant when I do see him.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

As I have a different type of cancer to you I don't have the experience you're looking for regarding whether pausing chemo would have an adverse effect or not, but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list where it'll be more easily seen.

You might like to take a look at these suggested questions to ask your consultant from Macmillan. Although they are generic you could take a look through them to see if you think any of them might be helpful to you.

It would be great if you could pop something about about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hello Ian

I am glad that the chemo has worked so well. My husband had PC and had chemo too although on a number of occasions this had to be delayed because of infections. There were no new adverse side effects when he went back to it.

I, honestly, don't think anyone knows the answer to your question on whether a break would have an impact. Chemo, in PC patients, seems to have variable outcomes.

As to questions, I think that the key will be to hear what the consultant suggests for further treatment.
