Feeling empty and lost

Hello.

After 19 months of treatment for ovarian cancer including many rounds of chemotherapy a major surgery my wife (Alison, 63) was told a few days ago that there is nothing more that can be done and Alison is going into palliative care. We don't know how long she has.

I've been very up and down over last month's and living on hope which has allowed me to support Alison. She is the bedrock of our 40+ year marriage and I now feel so empty and lost at the thought of her not being there. This makes me feel very selfish at a time she needs me most and then I feel guilty. Alison is a very strong person who wants to know everything about what is happening in terms of treatment and outcomes and can then cope. When she has been upset I've been there for her.

I just felt I needed to post this and chat to others in a similar situation. Thank you x

  • Oh my goodness what a terrible place to be in. I’m so sorry that you are experiencing this. You clearly have been a wonderfully supportive husband during Alison’s treatment and are now in the place where you need the support but cannot ask her for it.
you said that you wanted to chat with someone in similar circumstances; I’m afraid that I am not in your situation so not what you are looking for, but just wanted you to know that someone here is thinking of you. The only suggestion that I can make is that you research counsellors who can help you process this place you are in and have a place to talk without feeling you are a burden on Alison.
I wish you both luck and love. X

  • Thank you so much for your reply Jackie. I am going to call McMillan support. I wish all the very best too x

Why is the reason notjing more can be done after chrmo and surgery ?

  • Hello, I am sorry to hear your news, but don’t give in to those feelings of loss, they are just feelings, focus on your wonderful wife make those moments count and create lasting memories. I don’t believe death is the end, I truly believe that we will all meet again! Hang on to those 40 years. Alison would want you to continue your life and would be heartbroken if she thought that you are in such distress, you can do this and I promise you everything will be OK and you will meet againHeart️

    much love x

  • Thank you so much for your words, they are lovely. It's so hard but I will try to make the best memories with Alison x
