Hi everyone!

I have recently been diagnosed with a thyroid carcinoma in a struma ovarii. I have an appointment with oncology next week but have no idea what to expect and what kind of treatment I should expect. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience on this rare cancer type? This diagnosis followed the removal of a large ovarian cyst alongside my ovary and fallopian tube on one side, all scans and blood tests led me to believe it was benign so it came as quite a shock to find out it was not. I am finding it hard having little information on this and waiting for the appointment to come around so would find it comforting to hear others experiences. I am only 28 with no children, so I am definitely anxious about preserving my fertility.

Many thanks

  • Hi . I just dropped by, I'm from another group,  and noticed you've not yet had a reply to your post. My answering will "bump" it up to the top of the threads so hopefully someone will be along to answer - it may be no-one has experience of that particular cancer.

Nothing ever prepares us for the news that we have cancer, especially a rarer type. I think it's best to wait until you meet with your Oncologist. He/she will be able to fully explain everything and advise what treatment will be planned. Ask permission to record the conversation then you may need to follow up on anything you don't understand.

Once you have your treatment plan discussed, come back and share and we should be able to offer support.

In the meantime, why not ask a nurse on the Macmillan Support helpline, freephone number is shown below.

    Sending hugs, Bxx
