COVID booster vaccine during chemo cycle!?

My MDT has recommended I get the latest COVID booster vaccine as I will be immuno compromised via chemo treatment imminently. I asked my GP practice, they contacted the gynae/oncology team and they have given me a booster session 14 days after my first chemo and about 8 days before my second. Is this similar to what any of you have been advised?

I am also aware that an RSV vaccine is being promoted for vulnerable people as my elderly father has just been offered one.......?

Finally my partner works in a school so will be exposed to god knows what whilst trying to care for me part time. Carers no longer qualify automatically for COVID vaccines unless they themselves are vulnerable. Has anyone succeeded in persuading their GP to provide vaccine free to such a carer who does not automatically qualify based on potential secondary risk?

Many thanks, Paws.

  • Hi Paws

My own cancer was endometrial in 2022. I also had chemotherapy. I was also advised to have the Covid booster jab.

I was also offered the normal flu vaccine.

At the time I don't think that the RSV vaccine was available.

It does seem sensible for your partner to think about vaccination due to your vulnerability. I am not sure about the criteria for this or how much it would cost to arrange for one privately. I wonder if it would be worth giving the Support Line a call and talking to one of the nurses, who may be able to advise you.

I hope that your chemo goes well for you and that you do not have too many side effects. Mine was carboplatin and paclitaxel which I believe is often used for ovarian cancer to. Although I did have some side effects, on the whole they were manageable and treatable with medication.

One thing that was suggested to me was to buy a thermometer and to take my temperature regularly as knowing what is normal for you is important. You should be given a 24 hour number for the hospital and if you do have a change in temperature (up or down) then give them a call and they can often triage you over the phone.

  • Hi JaneHearts, thank you so much for your reply. The COVID jab will be another appt among so many! I suspect as regards my partner getting a jab we might have to pay privately.️

  • Normal temperature for everyone is 37.c or below !

So if your normal is  100.c  you must ring the line !!

Ear ones are the best !

Theyre all ok until the batteries start decreasing in energy ...

Then everyone's normal goes crazy !

           Keep smiling ! Laughing
