BRCA1 - recalled to hospital after MRI and mammogram

Hello,

I’m having maintenance treatment for stage 3c ovarian cancer, diagnosed last April. When I was found to have BRCA1 I was referred for genetic counselling and from there was made appts for a mammogram and MRI, both of which I had last week.

The post arrives and there it is - the brown envelope (and with about 10 mins to spare before the school run). I’ve been invited back to the hospital tomorrow for a breast exam, mammogram, CT scan and possibly needle biopsy. I phoned to speak to a nurse who tried to reassure me by saying that they probably just need to see what is normal for me as breasts change during the course of the month (not sure mine really do as I’ve had a total hysterectomy). Since then, I’ve noticed that my armpit feels quite tender. So now I’m really worried.

I wondered if anyone else with BRCA had experienced any of this? I’ve read that it’s unusual to have both of these cancers simultaneously and that the chemo administered for ovarian cancer can provide some protection against breast cancer.

Sending good wishes to everyone.

  • Hello, I’ve had a biopsy so just waiting for the results. They were concerned about my right breast and I certainly wouldn’t have picked up on any issue there.

It’s sent me into a bit of a spin, if I’m honest.

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s been through something similar.
