Hi I was supposed to have my debulking surgery for ovarian cancer yesterday, however it was cancelled at the last minute whilst I was sat in hospital with my gown and surgical stockings on. The surgeon told me he had cancelled it due to low staffing on the HDU so was unable to have a bed reserved. This surgery had been planned a month ago and after having another CT scan yesterday afternoon I am told there is swelling showing near my right kidney and may need a stent if it starts putting pressure on the urethra. The only good thing I suppose that came out of yesterday is that I will be starting chemotherapy in 2 weeks, to say I’m devastated is an understatement as I feel like I have waisted my life for the past month especially as I had to isolate for 14 days prior to the surgery. I understand that this is common for people who are waiting for major surgery and just highlights the massive understaffing and issues we have in the NHS and also how much of an impact corona virus is still having.
Hi . I'm so sorry to read your surgery was cancelled at the very last minute due to low staffing on HDU. I suppose in some ways better be safe that sorry if you would definitely need the bed.
I'm from the Womb group and one of my ladies was also waiting gowned and stockinged when she was send home due to Covid. I can't recall if she'd shown positive or it was in the hospital. You're right, we've had to spend so much time self-isolating and being careful it's changed our lives. My sister-in-law was admitted to hospital with pneumonia and never came out, she contracted Covid - it was in the middle of the pandemic.
Hopefully the ladies in this group will be along soon to chat. I hope your chemo goes well in a couple of weeks and you have your surgery soon.
All the best, B xx

Dead Love Rocks, I'm so terribly sorry to hear about your last minute cancellation. I had my debulkiing surgery last September and would have been devastated if d been cancelled so soon before the surgery..Is the revised plan to give you a few rounds of chemotherapy then do the surgery?.My cancer was inoperable at diagnosis so they did 3 rounds of chemo to shrink it, then the debulkiing surgery then a further 3 rounds of chemo.
Hi yes that’s the plan now, I hopefully start chemo on the 15/9
That's good. Hopefully the chemo will shrink the tumour so it is easier to remove when they do the surgery, which is what happened in my case. I was very scared about starting chemo but I actually felt better on it than before having it. The Gynae Oncology nurses told me that people often feel better because the chemo is shrinking the tumour so I'm hoping this will be the case for you too.
X
Thank you, I am just relieved I will be starting treatment x
Hi, I agree,
It must be devastating to have your op cancelled at the last minute. I’m about to start chemo again next week, it can’t come quick enough because at least we feel like we are treating it .
is this your first time on chemo?
Hi yes it is, I’ve now had 1 cycle of paclitaxol and carboplatin, I am due my 2nd cycle next week, I am just relieved my treatment has started
How are you feeling ? Have you tried the cold cap .?
I decided against using the cold cap as I didn’t fancy wearing it for 5 hours, I have shaved my head today as my scalp became very sensitive and painful.
I did the same first time around , had a lovely wig , tried loads of hats and scarves , I used to go on YouTube , some great ideas . I’m having a low dose of taxol each week for 9 weeks , so I’m trying the cold cap again this time . X
