After many, many years of back pain and very painful muscle spasms I have been diagnosed with multiple myeloma. So far I have had 2 MRI scans, a CT scan and bone marrow biopsy. I’m now waiting for a full body MRI scan before starting treatment. I’m 77 years old living on my own and concerned about the level of support I might need over the next few months. My children and grandchildren are all very supportive but live busy lives. It’s scary so any advice would be very welcome.
Hi Gardengeek,
Welcome to the forum although I am really sorry to read about your diagnosis. It is really hard to tell how you will feel when you start treatment as it can be so individual. There are times when you’re likely to feel tired and sick and times when you’ll feel like you have loads of energy due to the steroids. Do you have friends or neighbours nearby who might be able to lend a hand whenever you need it? Also, have you got online deliveries sorted for food? It also might be a good idea to stock up on easy foods like soups or ready meals? It is so hard to know how you will do during treatment - I carried on working and didn’t feel too bad but I was in my 30s so this might have made a difference. If you are concerned, I would mention it to your medical team and see if they have any suggestions or whether they can put your mind at ease. Also, I would hide anything from your family. I know they have busy lives but I’m sure that they’d want to be kept in the loop as to how you are doing and would want to support in any way that you can.
Wishing you all the very best with the treatment and please keep us updated as to how you are getting on.
Greg
Thank you so much Greg777. I am very lucky as my family do live nearby and are being very supportive. I already get online grocery deliveries and will take your advice and stock up on easy meals. It is great to know there are people who really understand to turn to for advice and support. I’ll keep you posted.
