I am only into the third week of treatment since first diagnosed. So far it has been ok. The only problem has been hiccups which lasted a couple of days when I was taking the steroids. Does anyone else suffer from this? Any ideas on how it might be dealt with.
I had hiccups for my entire round of Cisplatin treatments...I was miserable....Ginger is supposed to be good for the hiccups, but I had to look around to find it....Raw ginger can be found in stores, but it is quite spicy....Don't waste your time on Ginger Ale type drinks...None of them have any Ginger in them....Look for a grocery store that sells fresh sushi, they will normally have pickled ginger with them...That's the best one I could find
Hi Revalan, I have the same problem when I take 40mg Dexamethasone once a week and am guessing you are on a similar dose. I found that taking 20 pills in one go was too much of a shock for my stomach so I now spread it out over about 6 hours taking 5 pills (10mg) every 2 hours and making sure I eat something stodgy and absorbent at the same time I take each 10mg of the pills (like porridge, toast or similar.) It has made a huge difference to me and I tolerate it quite well now.
My consultant is also happy that I double up on Omeprazole to 2 x 20mg though I find Omeprazole nowhere near as effective as Ranitidine used to be when it was available.
Hope that helps.
Specialist agreed I could split the dose. I have taken 4 at breakfast, 3 at mid morning snack and 3 at lunchtime. This has made a huge difference and hiccups have only been very occasional.
Yes, but mine last about 30 seconds, putting it down to lenalidomide....Post stem cell.
Baclofen will sort them out.
I had bad hiccups when on Dex, very unpleasant for 2 days but I got excellent relief from Baclofen which was recommended by a palliative care doctor.
Your doctor might look at you funny when you suggest it, I had a junior doctor only give me a small dose when I was an inpatient which really annoyed me because and i needed a decent dose ( can't remember the numbers but I think it was two tablets) but it stops the hiccups completely within an hour and I didn't need any more baclofen after that until the next time.
I know the same is also true for other people I have recommended this to. It's a common problem with an easy solution but not many people seem to know about it.
Thanks for this. I have also discovered that spoonful of Greek yogurt really helps to stop hiccups.
