Please could you talk me through the process. Following on from blood test results last week, my dad is going for a bone marrow biopsy today and also a full body scan. He is also starting treatment this week, i think with 3 different drugs? I feel completely out of my depth and understanding. Please can you help me? Many thanks
Hi Kitty,
I am really sorry to read about your Dad and I hope that the bone marrow biopsy went ok. There are lots of different drugs for myeloma and they are normally given in a group of three when first starting out on treatment - one tends to be a novel agent (something specifically targeted at myeloma cells - mine was velcade), one tends to be a more general chemotherapy agent (mine was cyclophosphamide) and then a steroid (mine was dexamethasone). They are generally well tolerated, although watch out for a potential initial shock when your Dad starts treatment as his body gets used to the drugs.
Please feel free to ask any questions or just use this space to share any thoughts/worries. The initial diagnosis can be a huge shock, so be kind with yourself, it’s going to take some time before you’ll be able to get your head around things.
Greg
