Possible Melanoma

Hi, I’m new here and just wondering what the usual process of diagnosis is like?

I went to my GP 2 weeks ago who referred me for suspected melanoma as my mole has changed (different colours and irregular edge) and it was a 2 week referral. I received a letter in the post that said they’ve received my referal, but if I hadn’t heard anything by a specific date to give them a ring. I hadn’t heard anything, so I called and they said the consultants were going to look at my photos today, and then I might receive another letter?

From the few discussions I’ve read, I’ve never seen anyone mention that a consultant was going to look at their photos prior to an actual appointment.

Just looking for some clarity! Thanks in advance.

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your GP has referred you for a suspected melanoma and I know what a worrying time this can be for you.

When I was referred I was just sent straight to a dermatologist who examined the lesion, mine wasn't a mole, and decided to do an excision biopsy as he wasn't sure what it was. However, quite a few people here have gone down the same route as you, ie photographs taken and sent to a dermatologist first who will then decide whether they need to see you.

I assume the letter the person you mentioned said you might get would either be to give you an appointment for a physical examination or to tell you that no further investigation is necessary.

Let us know how you get on
