Need some advice please

Hi Everyone, This is my first post.

I had a skin biopsy 6 weeks ago for a dodgy looking mole, quite a lot removed at the time. I have this week chased the dermatologists and histology departments. Histology told me results were with the dermatologist and that they could not tell me anything (fair enough). Dermatologists PA has called me this morning and said that they have the results however the dermatologist has to meet with a team of people to discuss them further and they would get back to me.......AND THAT WAS IT! Now I know that we are in a very unsettling time for the NHS and there are many people going through a lot more than me but my head is now swimming.

Does ANYONE know what this meeting could possibly be?

TIA

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

Waiting for results is a really horrible time and everyone in this group knows exactly how you feel.

The meeting that your dermatologist's PA is referring to sounds like a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting where a team of specialists will discuss your results. If you click on the link I've created you can read more about it. Once this meeting has happened your consultant will be able to discuss the results of your biopsy with you and whether or not any treatment is needed.

I hope this helps and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you that you don't have melanoma.

Do pop back and let us know how you get on and in the meantime if you have anything you want to ask, or you just feel like a little rant, you know where we are.

  • Thank you so much, will take a look now. x

  • I should add that the dermatologist's PA/secretary is not allowed to give out results, whether it's to say you do or don't have melanoma, as they're not medically trained so won't be able to answer any questions you might have.

  • Hi Lee84,

As latchbrook pointed out its most likely a MDT meeting. I would ask the PA what day meetings take place (it's usually specific day of the week) so you can have an idea when you'll hear from them.

Hope you have good news before Christmas.

  • Yeah I thought this would be the case, do you know if everyone that has a biopsy has a MDT?

  • Thank you, its taken 6 voicemails and a call to histology to chase my dermatologists PA to get them to call me today for an update so I don't think I will get any info quickly unfortunately.

  • I'm afraid I don't know if that is the case or not. Sorry.

  • Hi Lee I am in the exact same position. After chasing I’ve been told they have the results but cannot tell me as they are not medically trained. It’s been 6 weeks since my moles were removed. I hope we both get results before Christmas just to put our minds at ease. Do share when you hear anything.

  • Hi,

sorry to hear how you are feeling at present , I do believe this feeling is very much normal during the waiting time for the results.
I am very much in the same position as you , some days it’s not on my mind and then other days it is all I can think about and , it does take over things .
A few days after having my biopsy taken I had a routine visit to the opticians and , they could see what they described as a possible very large birthmark at the back of my eye .
I have been to see a ophthalmologist today who was very surprised at the size and how nobody has ever seen this before. I briefly mentioned awaiting the results of the biopsy and she continued to say she wants previous X-rays from the opticians and to await my results of the biopsy and, will see me in 8 weeks with the possibility of referral being sent to Sheffield .
Due to the shock I asked absolutely no questions . She told me that this legion appears flat and it’s not bleeding but that was it .
I am an acute oncology nurse and was unable to think of anything to say or any questions to raise right there and then .
I also rang my consultants secretary re the results but, they have now been uploaded  and need reporting by the Doctor .
I totally understand it is such a hard time and very emotionally draining .
I always try to look at things from a positive angle and , I have sold it to myself today that if it is worst case scenario then , perhaps not knowing over Christmas will allow me to enjoy Christmas with my family (I know that might be the opposite for some people) but it is how I am focusing right now .
I really hope you get your results soon

    xx
