Hi all

What a great website and 'community' spirit nice to see some positive thinking surrounding such a negative subject. Apologies up front for the long winded post but if anybody can offer any advice or comment on their own experiences surrounding critical illness cover I'd appreciate it...

...I was diagnosed in March with an Invasive Nodular Malignant Melanoma on my back (originally went to check a different suspicious mole and discovered this one on my back by accident!) and have subsequently had two minor (although sizable scar!) operations to remove it.

It was recorded as 0.7mm depth on the Breslow scale? A nurse specialist has recently advised me that I would be eligible to claim on my Critical Illness insurance because it was 'Invasive' and 'Malignant'. I requested the claim forms from my insurance company last week who told me over the phone that there are no exclusions associated with this condition (with it being Invasive) and they would send out the relevant forms in the post.

My question...Does anybody have any experience of claiming against a 'critical Illness' insurance policy? Despite it being confirmed as 'Invasive', is 0.7mm significant enough to satisfy the insurance company - given there are no exclusions, or are they likely to avoid settling at any cost? I just wondered what the likelihood of success might be? My claims history is clear and all medical history has always been fully disclosed. Maybe I'm being too skeptical when it comes to insurance companies?

The only negative (apart from the cancer itself of course) is that I was diagnosed in March and the policy states that they must be notified within 13wks of diagnosis. However, It was not fully explained to me by the hospital until last week that the cancer was in fact Invasive and that they suggest I could claim...hence the delay.

Thanks in advance :D

Nigel

My prognosis is also good, my sentinel node biopsy came back clear so the melanoma thankfully doesn't appear to have spread. I am in a different situation to you in that my doctor told me mine was histologically invasive of the epidermis (he told me to find my insurance requirement which is just that and confirmed it met them) but he didn't tell me where I am on the Breslow Scale. I was at the Christie on Wednesday but saw another doctor which threw me so I didn't ask, and when I rang up afterwards the surgical secretary wouldn't tell me! From reading literature, based on the amount and frequency of my follow up appointments I would appear to fall into stage 1b. I was told my report would be sent to my insurance on Friday so just a waiting game. Because my prognosis is good I almost feel like   I am cheeky for claiming??  But then everyone keeps telling me I'm being ridiculous and Cancer is Cancer regardless of how good the prognosis. I just wish I knew what was going to happen. The little one is doing really well thank u, hope you and your family are good and u have a good Xmas xx

I hope you both get the critical illness payments that you deserve.  Anyone staged 1 or above has invasive melanoma, the only time it's not classed as invasive is when it's in situ, which is stage 0.  Don't be fobbed off.

On the one hand my claim seems straight forward and undisputable but on the other I just feel they will find a way not to pay! I have two policies but they know about each other as I was asked to declare this on the form. I'm sure they will reach the same decision which could be brilliant or gutting. I just wish they'd decide already waiting is making me tense!

I got good news on one and when I spoke to the financial guidance counsellor at Macmillan, she said if they pay on one they usually pay on the other.  Some take more time than others to process but like you I was worried it would be fabulous or nothing. I wish you good news soon - the waiting seems endless!  Nobody was more shocked than I to get the email.  I've had a sleepless night trying to process what it all means for us. Best of luck xx
