I was diagnosed with stage 2B melanoma last month, literally a month after I lost my grandad to cancer so it’s all hit very hard!
I'm now waiting to have surgery for a wide local excision and Sentinel lymph node biopsy. I will be having a skin graft with the wide local excision on my upper back. Then I’ll have to wait to see my oncologist to discuss immunotherapy treatment.
my cancer nurse said the surgery day is a long day but I’ll be on the day surgery ward.
I’m a married 33 year old with a 4 year old daughter and I know whatever this cancer throws at me I will battle!

just wanted to ask if anyone can suggest what to take with me for the surgery day and the drive home? We are 45 minutes drive from the hospital so I know the ride home is going to be uncomfortable!!

sending everyone lots of strength x

  • Hi

I’m sorry you find yourself here, I was diagnosed with stage 2C Oct 2023 and had surgery Jan 2024. I was in for the day but asked to take an overnight bag just incase, lose clothing was advised mine was on my shin.

My husband was allowed to stay with me until surgery but I took a couple of books and downloaded some stuff from Netflix and Disney on my tablet to watch, phone and tablet charger, AirPods and had my Spotify playlist and some calming music downloaded.

You maybe surprised that the ride home is ok the pain relief I was given as part of my surgery was so good I felt no pain until day 3 when it had fully worn off.

    take care

  • hi there

i know it is a worrying & scary time

like you I asked for what I may bring to hosp to help with discomfort/pain relief after wle & skin graft . My journey home was 1hr 15 .

I bought a v shape pillow / breast feeding pillow on Amazon & it was a lifesaver for car travel but also just comfort & security in bed & on the sofa especially if you have children who forget to be careful! you will use if for weeks afterwards as it can be a slow recovery

wishing you all the best x
