Hi everyone,
My mum's a stage four melanoma patient. She's been doing really well on her treatment and as far as we know her cancer is still shrinking. Today we noticed that she has a new mole that has appeared out of nowhere. It's on her neck, maybe slightly bigger than a pencil eraser, a dark purplish brown colour and smooth border. It doesn't look horribly like a melanoma - we have photos of her original one as a point of reference - but it's really got us freaked out and we won't be able to get it checked until Tuesday at the earliest because of the bank holiday.
I was wondering if anyone had experienced anything like this? I'm afraid it's another melanoma and that that could mean her treatment's not working anymore. Surely immunotherapy would stop her from developing new melanomas?
This journey is never easy for a minute.
Pip
Posting an update.
When Mum woke up today, the mole had visibly grown, developed an uneven border and changed colour. We can't get a specialist nurse to check it because it's a Sunday, but I spoke to a macmillan nurse who thought it was a good idea to get it clinically assessed today if we can. I rang 111 and now we're waiting for an out of hours GP to ring back.
We've spoken to a doctor now and sent some photos, and he's pretty sure it's some kind of damage to the skin and not a melanoma, so that's reassuring. Mum's still going to get checked out by her specialist nurse on Tuesday.
Thanks for the update Pip93 – hopefully, you'll get the same reassurance on Tuesday. In the meantime, you've done all you can now, so I hope you manage to have some rest and peace tomorrow before you see the specialist nurse on Tuesday. We had some terrible rain with thunder today before it brightened up. Not sure what the weather is going to be tomorrow. But, hope you manage to have a good day whatever you do and whatever the weather. Take care. xx
Hi, how did your mum get on? As a stage 4 patient I know the worry of getting another melanoma, I’ve had my fingers crossed for you xx
Hi Nellyjelly,
Mum sent some photos to her specialist nurse on Tuesday, and we haven't heard back yet but it's looking very much like it's a bruise rather than a new mole - something like a blood blister. I'll feel better once we get it confirmed for sure. Things like this are always so worrying these days.
Thank you for asking!
Hope you're doing well yourself,
Pip x
