Cycle clothing

Hi everyone.

After my wife noticed a changing mole on my back at the end of August I had it removed by my GP 2 weeks later.

It turned out to be a melanoma in situ but a further procedure was now necessary to make sure it was all clear.

Had that today and a further biopsy report now awaited so fingers crossed.

However I'm a keen cyclist and do about 12 hours a week all through the year. Has anyone got any tips as to what products are best.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi there,

I am not sure how suitable they are for cycling but mountain warehouse, uniqlo and Solbari all have UV protective clothing and hats.

  • Thanks for that. I'll check them out.

  • Hi  I too am a keen cyclist and had the same dilemma as you. I could get my head around wearing UV sleeves when I cycled but couldn’t stand the thought of wearing tights in the summer months . I have now accepted defeat and ride regularly indoors on Zwift. I am not sure if you have tried indoor cycling, I know turbo sessions are the worst but Zwift and the online community, group rides, races and events make it enjoyable…..worth a thought.

  • Quite a few of my clubmates use Zwift when the weather is bad but it's not for me. I've just ordered some leg sleeves from Castelli, in white, which are UV inhibited and although I think they will look iffy I'd rather be out looking odd than not be out at all.

  • I can understand why you choose to ride outside and I wish you all the best. I can recommend life jacket sun protection for the areas you cannot cover with clothing.

  • Thanks for that - it looks good for my purposes.

  • Hi Lynskey just reading this made me think of my holiday this summer. I'm a keen swimmer, my diagnosis was June this year so alot changed in a short period. I bought a hat, long sleeve swim top and leggings from Solbari. I felt a little self conscious fully covered on the beach but a bit like you it was being able to do something I enjoy "safely" that really cheered me up. Go enjoy those miles on your bike! X

  • I'm not riding at the moment as I'm waiting to have my stitches out - (2 days time) but like you I've bought all sorts of hand, arm and leg protection together with Solbari base layers. Life Jacket is my chosen sun screen as suggested earlier on this thread although only used it in the garden so far. I'm just hoping the biopsy result is clear when I go in 2 days time.

  • Had my stitches out today and my boipsy result showed no residual cancer cells. Consultant totally happy to discharge me with no follow up required. Maximum sun protection from now on and regular check up on any moles. Another 10 days before I should ride my bike again just to make sure I don't stress the wound. Thanks for all the helpful comments and suggestions.

  • So pleased you have no spread.

Enjoy being back out on your bike
