Hospitals not keen to biopsy?

My husband is under investigation for melanoma for the third time in six months- all separate lesions. The first two, identified a month apart earlier this year, the hospital was very reluctant to biopsy because they didn’t think the lesion, in each case, was anything. Both were melanomas. Today he’s had his third biopsy. Again, the hospital doesn’t think it’s melanoma but this time an atypical keratosis. Reluctant to biopsy again. Consultant  in the end decided to biopsy because of his recent history and because they were wrong twice before. Is this cost cutting? NHS resources are under pressure, we know. Biopsy results will take up to six weeks to come through, which is getting longer each time.

  • Hi

I wouldn't have thought that the reason the consultant was reluctant to perform a biopsy was to try and cut costs but, then again, the NHS is extremely stretched so who knows!

Unfortunately, a six week wait is not unusual. Mine took 6 weeks to come back and that was 3 years ago. I think the length of time that a biopsy takes to come back is very dependant on how busy the path labs are. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the consultant is right and that this lesion is an atypical keratosis.

  • Hi , this must be a frustrating time time for you and your husband, I think I’d feel like telling my husband he’s not allowed out in the sun ever again!! It can’t be nice doubting the professionalism of your consultant, I suppose time will only show if he was right in his assumption, and I think if you at all feel that it is melanoma that you would rather have it removed than take the chance. I hope the weeks until your results pass quickly for you.

    Take care KT
