Lymph nodes behind the knee

Just wondering why my SLNB will be in my groin when nearest nodes for my melanoma are the ones at the back of my knee.

  • Hello , it’s my understanding that SLNB’s are to neck, armpit or groin. I am not a medic and I haven’t had a SLNB or heard on this site of anyone having one to a knee. I’m wondering if this video from the 2018 Melanoma Patient Conference might help, it’s Dr Oliver Cassell explaining checking your lymph nodes rather than a SLNB but I think it might help.

You could put a question in ask the expert For a nurse to give an explanation.

  • Hi I had a melanoma removed from near my knee and had the SLNB in the groin. Never thought to ask why!

  • Thank you KT, I thought it was to do with Sentinel nodes, just thought I would ask on here, due to people keep asking why my groin and not my knee

  • Hi Diane1951, I think KT is right about it is to do where your sentinel nodes are located.

I asked this question to Mr Cassell who I was under when my melanoma was diagnosed on the side of my knee back in 2016. (I had my SLNB  in my groin) he said it was because normally melanoma travels upwards into the blood stream so if it was to spread it would first hit the lymph nodes in groin.

  • Hi , I just read your profile to catch up on what’s happening with you (I remember your user name from a while ago). Sorry to hear about your bowel operation, did you manage to get to the July skin check?

    Hi #katathome

Thanks for remembering me and so pleased to see you are still helping people using this site, I know you and others helped me out numerous times with your advice and guidance, so many thanks.

I have not had a skin check since last November as that is when my bowel problems started and have had two operations one in Feb and last one in May. I was going for a skin check in July and then the day before was taken ill and was admitted to the local hospital where I was found to have an infection. Luckily not too serious but I have to have another bowel procedure in Sept.

However,  I have been keeping an eye on things regarding skin and not worried anything new has shown up which is good news, hopefully will get to have a skin check before the end of the year!

    Regards
