Hi, after noticing a strange black mark under my toenail(5mm wide) about 6 weeks ago I popped to my gp surgery and was told to basically go away for 2 wks then come back if still there. I monitored it for almost a week. Went back to surgery saw different gp. She looked at it and said straight away that she’s referring me and it will be in next 2 weeks. My appointment is 19/7. Can anyone help me on what to expect from 1st appointment and how soon I’ll get the results?

  • Hi , I’m sorry to hear you are in limbo at the moment, sometimes getting closure wether it’s good or bad news is better than the in limbo feeling. Subungal or acral lentiginous melanoma is quite rare, I haven’t had that type I had an unknown primary. Most melanoma diagnosis’s start with a referral from the GP to a dermatologist who makes the decision as to wether a suspected melanoma is removed by an excision biopsy by a plastic surgeon. So I’m expecting your next appointment to just be a dermatologist having a look through an eye piece. I’m hoping someone with experience will come forward to help and I’m hoping might read this and help aswell. If you click on the user name to read the profile you will see some of their experience.

The time for referral for surgery and from surgery to get the results varies from area to area so unfortunately my reply of ask at your next appointment is going to sound a bit like a cop out. I’m hoping the next link will be of some help to you.

I hope your wait is kind to you and that you can keep busy and distracted or focus on what questions to ask and it sounds like you have a good start.

    best wishes

    Take care KT
