Hi All,

I am new to this site and was hoping for some advice with regards to have my lymph nodes removed from my groin 3 weeks ago along with a wide local excision on my calf for stage 3 malignant melanoma. I was realised out of hospital with 1 drain in ad it was taken out after 1 week, I have had a course of antibiotics as the area got infected. I am having alternative day dressing changes by the nurses to the house, but there is still a lot of fluid leaking from the groin which is driving my anxiety through the roof as I am having to be careful of what to wear due the leakage. I have a 4 year old daughter and 30 years old and starting to get my mobility back but this is stopping me! Can anyone help?

  • Hi , I’m sorry to hear about your stage 3 and the problems your having after your lymph node removal. I had only one node removed after a recurrence and didn’t require a drain. It sounds like you say your infection is cleared so that’s one piece of good news, and with a nurse visiting every other day have they been able to give advice at all about you still leaking, how much to rest and building up your mobility?

I saw that latchbrook has given you a welcome in the skin cancer group and given you the link to Macmillan info on lymph node dissection. There has been a discussion recently that might interest you I will put the link in so you can find it quicker if you haven’t read it.

I was hoping it might give some reassurance that others have had problems and been ok afterwards or might spur you on to ring your skin cancer nurse to ask further questions on how you can make sure your recovery is the best it can be and talk through your specific worries with them, or indeed voice them here, or on the Macmillan support line (the number is after my signature), this site also has an ask an expert section.

I understand your life must be quiet active usually with a 4 year old and it’s horrible having to slow down, Walking and keeping active is a big part of my life and I was told not to do Netball or any lifting or bending for a few months after my op, I let the hoovering slide for a bit or accepted help, took things slowly for a bit and accepted lifts to support my team in a tournament I missed playing in.

I hope worries aren’t crowding in to much on you, and you can can voice any here, I bet there is someone who will have experienced the same thoughts.

    Best wishes

    Take care KT

    Hi KT

    thank you for your reply.

I am going to jot down a few questions today and to be sure give my skin cancer nurse a call today to go through a few things, I feel like I want to be mobile but the leaking is just getting in the way!

I will for sure check out the other link too.

    Thank you xx

  • Hi , I can imagine that’s really frustrating, the Guy and Thomas link in the discussion says they don’t take the drain out until less than 30mls is collected and it gives a guide line on when you might need to talk to a nurse, but the bottom line is that’s when you don’t feel happy with how things are going.

I hope some others will chip in when they have some down time with their experience, and that you let us know how you get on. (Edited due to keyboard errors)

    Take care KT
