Hi I've been back to hospital today for follow up appt with plastics. After over half hour I was called in to say after 5 weeks no results were showing on the system . Waited a further hour to be told they came back inconclusive and they had Been sent to specialists in Warwick. A further 2 weeks of waiting.

  • I hope you come back  and tell us what your final results are after your long wait.

There is a video from the 2018 Melanoma Patient Conference which goes through what pathology have to do I’ve put the link in just in case you’re interested. https://youtu.be/Z5xONTdORxA

I again hope the wait isn’t too bad for you.

    Take care KT

    Hi,Shelvox,

I read your post with interest as I had a similar area removed from the underside of my toe in April. The  biopsy was in Dec of last year and the results were   sent to another specialist hospital for their expert opinion. It seemed to be a long period of time between the biopsy and eventual wide local excision. My outcome was that of Acral Melanoma and I required a skin graft, which has healed pretty well although being on the foot has been a painful recovery.Hope all goes well with your results and if you need any info I'd be glad to help

    Regards Stewarton

  • Many thanks Stewarton. Out if interest did you have the initial lesion removed for the biopsy.? I'm more or less healed from the WLE of the full removal for biopsy. Plastics did say if it's melanoma they would need to cut out more then skin graft ? I'm really confused

    Hi Shelvox,

Yes I did have the initial lesion removed for the biopsy in Dec of last year and diagnosis of Acral melanoma in March of this year. The wide local excision and skin graft took place a month after diagnosis. Each case is different I suppose and timescales vary.Im in Scotland, not sure if that makes a difference.Hope you don't have too long to wait for results.Keep in touch

  • Hi

I suspect that what you are calling a WLE is, in fact, the excision to remove the suspect mole/lesion for biopsy.

What normally happens when you have a suspected melanoma is that the whole lesion is removed by excision and sent off to the pathology labs to be biopsied. If it proves to be melanoma then you have a WLE to remove between 1cm and 2cm all the way around the original excision site. The size of the WLE depends on the depth of the melanoma and if you have to have a large WLE then you may need a skin graft. Although my WLE was 2cm all around the plastic surgeon was able to close the wound without a skin graft.

You might also be offered a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) at the time of the WLE if the melanoma is Stage 1b or more.

    Hope that helps

  • Thank you for your reply. I've been off work since end of April after having a rotator cuff repair after a fall in November. Missed fracture from x-ray so ended up with an operation. I only went to doctors as the mark between my toes was getting bigger in the past year or so.  I saw it a dirty mark !! But it wouldn't come clean. Having it checked out was a very quick process to having it removed all within a month. Now it seems a waiting game for results. The dermatologist had inspected it with her instruments and said it clinically looked like malignant melanoma and passed me onto plastics for removal. I'm due to return to work end of july after 3 mths off. I'm not getting a decent sleep and days are long. Looking forward to return to work fingers crossed the result outcome is good. I may even ring the secretary next week for update. I've gone through the past 6 years losing both parents to pancreatic and lung cancer. Seeing my 10 yr old niece die from neuroblastoma and father in law to lung cancer too. Need some positive news.
