Hi, I will be having WLE surgery on an inner thigh next month and am curious about how long the healing stage will be. It is for a stage 1a melanoma. Will I need time off work? Thank you
Hi and a warm welcome to the online community
My WLE was on my arm so I don't have the experience you're looking for. I was hoping someone who'd had a WLE on their thigh would have come forward to offer their thoughts by now but as they hadn't I thought I'd pop on.
I think a lot might depend on what sort of job you have as to how much time you'll need off work, ie are you on your feet all day or only at times. The best person to ask about this would be your SCNS as she will have dealt with lots of WLEs and will be able to give you an idea of how long you might need to be signed off work initially.
You could also post your question in ask a nurse and one of the specialist cancer nurses will aim to respond within 2 working days.
When you feel ready it would be really useful if could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Let us know how the WLE goes

Hi Latchbrook,
Thank you so much for your reply and guidance - I greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness in responding. I will post details of my journey on my profile and contact my SCNS on Monday. In the main I am pretty calm about things - the reason for my query is due to the wound from my original biopsy not having healed properly after just over 3 weeks. Also, I am on my feet all day at work. Thank you once again for your kindness. I hope you're keeping well x
I can understand how you feel about the wound healing. My first excision reopened when I had the stitches removed a week later and I had to have it restitched after spending most of the night waiting for it to be done in A&E!
When I had my WLE the plastic surgeon used dissolvable stitches so I didn't needed to worry about the wound reopening. I'm not sure if that's always the case with WLEs but it would be worth telling your surgeon about your problem with your wound healing.
I've just had a second excision, for what I hope will turn out to be nothing, and I mentioned my previous experience to the plastic surgeon. He's put dissolvable stitches in so hopefully the wound will heal well.

Hi there,
I had WLE on thigh 2 years ago. I had 16 stitches and went out for coffee afterwards! Thinking back it was all over so quickly! I was nervous about standing fir two long and just anted to keep my leg elevated. I sit at work, but ended up having 5 days off, as much to get over the stress as the actual wound. I wore leggings after op as felt they held the dressing in place, but that’s all I can remember....
My WLE healed really quickly and I had no pain or soreness whatsoever, I still can’t understand why, but glad that was the case.
Hope yours goes as well too.
take care
Hello, thank you so much for your response. I feel a lot more positive now and also more in control I guess having a better idea about what to expect. Having read through other posts I've seen the different ways that people are affected by the news that I received. I am fairly calm to be honest and have good faith in the treatment and care that I will receive. I'm glad things worked out so well for you. I am on my feet all day at work so will see how it goes. Than you for your kind thoughts x
