Hello

ok looking for a bit of advice really all started 7 weeks ago (history melanoma 1mm 2009) noticed a swollen lymph node right side neck under jaw line so went to GP after 3 weeks as it was still there she said let’s wait and see for another 2 weeks then we can go from there.

ok so waited still there after a further 2 weeks so now Dr said lets get you booked for an altra  sound scan that’s been over 2 weeks now still no appointment date chased hospital said ok we have a cancellation we can fit you in for 7th may so from when I first noticed this and time to scan it will be 12 weeks.

felling really concerned by this so called my GP asked for call back and she said your last blood result was the same as your last result I had in January this year so that’s reassuring and also as you are not getting any pain from the swollen node that’s very reassuring also so no need for urgent referral.

is this right because thinking worse case from my understanding if NO pain then that’s more worrying than having pain because is usually infection and also I have had no colds any ilness really?

  • Hi

I don't think it matters how long ago or how recently we were diagnosed with melanoma we always worry that a swollen lymph node means that the melanoma has spread to it. However, as you say, lymph nodes can be swollen for all sorts of reasons.

It sounds like your GP is taking you seriously and you have an appointment in a month's time for an ultrasound. Not having had any problems with my lymph nodes I don't know if the fact the your node is swollen but not painful is a good sign or not. However, unless you have any reason to doubt your GP, I would think that if she say's she reassured by the lack of pain then you should be too.

You could always post this question in ask a nurse and one of the specialist cancer nurses will aim to respond within 2 working days.

I've looked back through your previous posts and see that this time last year you had problems with both lymph nodes either side of your neck. Did you manage to get to the bottom of what was causing them to swell?

When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your journey into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Let us know how you get on when you have the ultrasound.

    Hi Lactbrook

thank you for your reply my scan last year they said I have one node either side of neck and because they are sat on vain there are more prominent than the others said there nothing to worry about I had them for a while and still seem to be ok.

this new lymph node just came from no ware I have been feeling fine there is no pain or discomfort in the node so just getting me slightly worried I just spoke to my skin cancer nurse from when I was diagnosed back in 2009 she is going to see if they can push the appointment through for me.

    i will up date profile.

    thanks and regards

  • Hi Chris

I'm pleased to hear that the nodes on either side of your neck are nothing to worry about and that your SCNS is going to try and get your appointment brought forward.

    Keep us informed
