Bad skin rash after finishing immunotherapy (Pembro)

I’ve got a nasty raw red rash which started on my feet but is now progressing up my body. It started after I’d finished my 12 months of Pembro - I didn’t have any rashes during treatment and had nothing like this before. Dermatology have ruled out fungal, viral and bacterial causes and assume it’s immunotherapy-related. I’m using a steroid cream but it doesn’t seem to be helping. Has anyone else had similar? I had been so looking forward to finishing my treatment and returning to some kind of normality so this (plus the return of loads of joint pain and an unhealed biopsy wound) has set me back really badly.

  • Hi

That rash certainly sounds unpleasant and I hope your medical team are able to get on top of it soon.

I don't have any personal experience but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

    Hello Cerys30,

I'm 6 months along in the Pembro treatments. My rash started on my torso. Initially it was red and raw like yours, then it turned very dark purple and now it's almost black. I'm concerned that it is necrosed underneath the surface. I also have numerous "small" wounds that refuse to heal. I go through a lot of dressings trying to spare my clothing, furniture and bedding. I'm going to ask my family doctor to burn them closed with silver nitrate sticks. They'll scar no matter what, so it ahouldn't matter if the scar comes from a chemical burn instead of a painfully slow developing keloid. I'll let you know if she decides to go through with my idea, or calls me an idiot.

  • Oh, that sounds grim. Has your oncologist not referred you to dermatology or plastics? Your rash sounds different from mine but I did have a problem with a biopsy wound not healing for months - I then stopped using dressings, let it scab over and now it looks horrible but it’s healing. My rash is now a lot better after an intensive course of strong steroid creams - my feet literally started shedding dead skin like some kind of human lizard! Like you I now have dark purple marks but they seem to be fading. Best of luck with your wounds healing - I’d try your oncologist again if you haven’t already, there must be something they can do to help? Best of luck and let me know how you get on.

  • Im 9 months in and have suddenly started getting swollen burning lips.. Unbearable actually and hives on my neck and chest.. I'm now on a month of steroids and immunotherapy has been suspended. I also had hives on the inside of my knees ! These have gone but left deep red marks. I waiting to see an Immounogilist

  • Hi Cerys30

I am just about to finish 2 yrs of Pembro , I had a rash on both feet last year and was lucky it responded to antihistamines and faded out. I hope you soon get some relief from this and your wound has now healed as you said its a good feeling to think you may return to some kind of normality .
