Hi, my mum was diagnosed with lung cancer 2 weeks ago, she has since slept alot, lost her appetite and lost weight, she had a petscan on Friday so are still awaiting results. The whole family is really concerned with how she seems to be, is this normal?

  • Hello there,

It must be very difficult for all of you to take in such very unwelcome news. I was diagnosed last April. For me it was a shock but not a surprise as I had been a smoker. Everyone manages the news very differently. I didn’t want to think about it until I had a full diagnosis and could find out about next steps. I joined both MacMillan and Roy Castle lung site so I could find out more about the diagnosis procedure. I spent many hours watching tv as a distraction plus doing sleep meditation and anything I could think of to avoid worrying. I’m wondering if your Mum is suffering from shock and doesn’t know where to go from here. She may be suffering from extreme anxiety. I hope she is able to have the results of the scan soon. All the waiting for results and finding out a treatment plan, I personally found the most stressful part of the process. There is lots of false information out there on Dr Google. I think it’s much better to ask on here.

You could contact one of the cancer nurses on this site to discuss it all and find some support for yourself, your family and of course your Mum. I’ve found talking to professionals and the people here so very helpful. BTW, I’m 70 at the moment.

Sending hugs to you all Bouquet and love

  • Thankyou so much for replying, think we are all in limbo until lthe results are through. Mum is 73, she just doesn't seem motivated in anyway at the moment, maybe it is shock. Hopefully when we get the results and a plan in place things maybe easier to deal with x
