Hi I am new here.
My mum has recently been diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer on top of having Breast Cancer diagnosed just 2 months ago. She is 85 and not being considered for any treatment only palliative care. She has been referred to the hospice about 3 days ago.
Does anyone know what I should expect in the coming days or weeks.  and if should contact the Hospice or wait for them to contact us?

Many thanks

  • So sorry to hear about your mum ,

sending you love and strength , I would have thought the hospice will contact you with a plan , as sad as hospices can be they offer the best support for your family and the best pain management for you mum , I no has I used to work In one .

    sending a big hug

    Mamma

  • I believe (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong) but the hospice referral would be done through your GP, so you can contact them if you would like an update on how that is progressing. If you know which hospice the referral is for, you can visit their website to read ahead on things like visiting, stop-overs, facilities and other information you may find useful.

  • Hi Mav, thank you for ure msg. I contacted the hospice today and they have arranged to visit and assess mum next Tuesday x I’m going to have a look on their website. Sadly lost my dad at the same hospice 22 years ago so I am familiar with them and it was a wonderful place back then xx

  • Hi Tina, I'm glad your local hospice is a good one (our is too, and although my mum wants to stay at home, I hope they're there if we need them. They work in the community too with palliative / end of life care.

Sorry to hear about your dad. 22 years is a long time, and here you are again. I hope they look after you and your mum, I'm sure they will. She will be in the best possible care.
