My mum is a fit 76 years old and until 5 weeks ago, was a size 12. She doesn't drink, and gave up smoking 40 years ago. She walked 4 miles a day.
She is now a size 6-8.
Lost 2 stone in 3 weeks and 7Ibs in week 4 and 4ibs this week.
She has had a endoscopy for stomach cancer, which they have are convinced is there but don't know what sort. She also has lots of spots on her lungs and two other bigger patches.
She is therefore being seen by gastric and respiratory teams to see what it is.
She is now having a 3rd endoscopy in stomach and EBUS in lungs.
Ebus is today at Brompton..
They know her presentation is unusual and taking time to find out what she has. ..
She is very stoic, but cannot eat much. She is eating soups as can't swallow well and gets full in minutes.
Simultaneously my dad was diagnosed (age 87) with vascular dementia on Monday and was told to stop driving there and then, which floored him. He is struggling too.
All a bit overwhelming....
It must be so difficult for you to stay strong while your mum is suffering .i cant be any help in the medical side of things .but i am syrprised they have nit offered your mum those little bottles if milk which are full if nutrients and vitimins they gave them to my mum when she was struggling to eat .you cannot buy them but can be given on prescription .sorry i cant remember what they are called .i hope you have someone to talk to medical ir otherwise .because it is so hard to stay strong when you are having so much to deal with .hopefully you will get all the answers soon
Thank you. The difficulty she has is that she has never liked milk based foods or drinks. All the supplements seem to be milk based and she can't tolerate them.
That is a shame that she cannot tolerate milk ,i would still talk to some of the team see if they can come up with any suggestions,i remembered now that my mum had fortisip ,but there are others like this is food/ensure plus/meritine do a chicken based soup ,my mum would have that now and then,or you could make homemade soup for her
